Koreans refer to an ethnic group. You can find Koreans in North Korea, South Korea, China, Russia, Vietnam, Philippines and a few other countries. It is sad that North Korea and South Korea who have basically the same ethnic group is divided for so long. It is like a pair of twins who do not acknowledge each other. I do not think I will live to see North and South Korea united. Both China and US are factors causing the divide, on top of political and economical difference.

Yes, if US does not come and meddle, then war is not a likely option. US seems to go all out to provoke North Korea to test nuclear weapon. If only US can stay away, and let China handles the North Korea issue.

@scheng1 I am not sure if war will happen if U.S. doesn't interfere.

@sjvg1976 US is not even in Asia, and yet it wants to meddle into Asia. That is really a bit too much. If not for China, US will surely bomb North Korea, and send troops in.

You reminds me of Germany. It was a country that had been divided for a long time, too. They still got united at last. It may need a generation to make all Germans to be one again. The time will change everything.

@scheng1 That's no problem for me. Perhaps we are so afraid to be the only one communist country in the world? Who cares? We shall be as precious as the pandas

@youless I pity those families broken up by the separation of North and South Korea. Imagine children and parents never have a chance to meet up again. Husband and wife do not have the chance to have a family life again. It is sad, and they have been waiting for more than 50 years, and still no hope of ever seeing each other.

North and South Korea are different in a sense. China does not want North Korea to change its regime. That means China does not want North Korea to be part of South Korea, and changes from communist country. That is a big difference already. Germany does not have this problem in this aspect.

History of this country makes lots of differences like here in Philippines the 3 Island which makes them as one the Philippines by the way our present President is belong to the last island the Mindanao which makes him very different because there are things in the past needed to change and Change in this world is always expected

Sad thing is that Korea was a single country split into two now. With the influence of US and China, unification is not possible. I think the people want unification, because husband and wife who happened to be in different area would not have a chance to meet up again. Same with children and their parents. They probably never thought that they have no chance to see each other again.

Sad to think that the only way to unite it is a major war like what happened in Vietnam

Not possible. China and US will not want to war against each other. Any war between North and South Korea will end up as war between China and US. China still wants North Korea as a communist country. US does not want South Korea to become a communist country. That is why both North and South Korea will not unite.

@louievill Russia is not a big factor. Russia is a good friend of China too. I think US has to learn to manage its relationship with China. Once the relationship is good, Asia is more or less a peaceful place.

Of course, they won't. ONE SIDE is ruled and feared the Kim dynasty and the military. While the other is a Free democratic Nation. But I think with out the kim and his loyalist, the people will enjoy the freedom South korean has. There had been videos of DVD's of south korean movies reaching the north, but they are very careful not to be exposed.

The influence of US and China is too strong. There is no way North Korea can get away from communism because China does not allow it. There is no way South Korea can get away from democracy and capitalism because US does not allow it. If both China and US can stop meddling, then both North and South Korea can work something out to allow open access to their people, and improve on trade.

I think it would take a cataclysmic change to unite the two countries.

Yes, definitely. China wants North Korea to continue as a communist country, and US wants South Korea as a democracy. If we take out the influence of China and US, then North and South Korea have hope of unification.

@JudyEv Not "some" countries, only one country will do so. China has invested heavily in so many countries, yet not once does it meddle into the local politics.

If China and US do not meddle, at least there is a hope. As it is, China wants North Korea as a communist country, and US wants democracy for South Korea. I pity the people in both countries.
