It is critical to begin the process of improving our mental functions related to memory and activities which require mental alertness. Here are some easy tips ways: - Organize your environment and schedules to avoid distractions and interruptions while you are at a certain activity/task. - To improve your performance, focus on one activity at a time. - Cultivate new interests and pursue new hobbies. Keep yourself socially active and stay connected to family and friends. - Pursue a couple of intellectual activities like reading and writing, to build cognitive reserves. - Increase your attention span by making a deliberate effort to remember things. Marking reminders on your calendar could be helpful. - Avoid sitting too long and stretch at regular intervals. Walking is the best exercise to keep your brain working. - Reduce stress by performing relaxation exercises like yoga or meditation. Practice slow deep breathing. Prolonged inactivity can be a serious health hazard. - Watch what you eat. Omega-3 fatty acids have been noted as brain food protecting the brain from decline. - Take short naps; it could improve your memory. However a longer nap could cause grogginess and slow your performance. - Finally, integrate positivity in all aspects of your life. Learn to accept aging with fewer complaints and greater appreciation of all the good things you enjoy each day while you live. Image: Courtesy of Pixabay

I am not sure about the short naps, my Mom is 96, she still has a great memory and she never took a nap during all her life. I am like her, I do not need a nap during the day, it makes me groggy.

@LadyDuck I commend you & your mom not needing a nap. It has been said that short naps known as "power" naps improves one's performance. Even some work places allow siesta time. I wish you & your mom the best- -- 96 years is indeed something to be proud of.

@Gabugs Nobody believe she is 96. She still lives alone, take care of her home and goes grocery shopping twice a week.
