Remember School Dinners?

I loved my school dinners .. says rather grandly .. I was a table monitor! Ohh dear frogspawn tapioca giggles, I loved that, I'm sure our dinner ladies did it like that deliberately .. all the kids loved it .. we also had steak and bogey pie - steak & kidney and the pieces of kidney were small and greenish in colour .. lumpy custard .. burnt offerings (apple crumbles) .. vegetables cooked for so long they were practically mush ... peas like bullets .. but I loved it all ... mm that's making me feel hungry now ...

I actually have a funny story about school lunches. When I was in elementary school we had breakfast too if we so choose. They had the best donuts. But that's not the story. The mayor, it was announced, would be coming to have lunch with the kids that made all A's on their report card for that grading period. I happened to be one of those kids. So the day comes and the mayor comes and eats or normal cafeteria food with all of us meager elementary school students. The major got sick from the food. Very sick. Like as in she made a scene sick. After that - she made it so that we had better lunches at our school. We started having pizza hut pizza delivered on Fridays. We had bag lunch days where we had deli sandwhiches, juice boxes, chips and fruit. It wasn't the best food - but it was so much better than what we had been eating...Boiled potatoes - green jello with cabbage in it- orange jello with carrots and raisons in them - boiled potatoes - mystery meat - rectangle slices of cardboard tasting pizza. One thing I did love though - were those chocolate - peanutbutter - oatmeal no-bake cookies. I still make those sometimes.

Yea, I actually liked school lunch. And over the years talking to other people who went to OTHER schools, it seems our school had the best lunches. Wish I could go and eat there now! Some of the best food they served at our school were: Johnny Marsetti, Chili, Chicken & Noodles with hot rolls, grilled cheese and tomato soup, apple crisp, peanut butter smoooooothie, etc.

My favorite was the pizza and the chicken nuggets. Everything else was pretty bad.
