How does a non dog lover prepare to become one?

Well the time is here: time to get the kids a dog. I don't look forward to the poop, shots, or possibility of ticks/fleas/ringworm/etc. Other than finding a vet (which I already have) how do I prepare for this?

Well if you don't really want to get a dog why are you forcing yourself to? It is kind of like having a child if you don't really want one. I think your heart needs to be in it.

Because I'm putting the wants of my kids over my own desires, that's what parents do. I told them we could get a dog when we got a house and we have been in our home 2 years now.

@opinionated1 Read a book about dog ownership before you get one. Unless they are asking you about it..I would hold off until you decide you really want one, and are willing to love it. Too many dogs get returned because people didn;t know what they were getting into.

A dog is a huge commitment and a lot of work. I wish you all the best.

I would get a book, and read up on it. Being a responsible pet-owner entails so much. And find a book for your children to read, as they need to know how necessary it is for the dog to have fresh food and water, to be groomed and walked and loved and even to be left alone at times. Good luck.

Thanks so much for the advice- especially the part on me time being important for pets because I could see my kids smothering Kira (that's what we're going to name her).
