That is a good question. I live in Arizona. It is not cheap to live here in the summer time. I live in the Valley in a town that is in the top three best places to retire. Heating my house is easy in the winter cause it does not get excessively cold but it costs a lot to cool the house in the summer months. The costs vary throughout the State though. Up in the mountains, the cost of living may be different.
In the past, I lived in Texas and that seemed to be not so expensive year round. In Michigan, it was most definitely not cheap especially in the winter months. Heating and cooling your home is where you spend a large amount of money. The initial cost of your home depends on how big and fancy it is. The location of your home can impact the price of it. You have to shop around to find a bargain. Live within your means. Set a monthly budget for living costs like food, utilities, insurance, etc. With a small patch of ground, you can grow your own food to save money and eat well.
I would not live in California. It is expensive just to visit.
Nevada is expensive and has lots of temptations to spend money gambling.
Those are a few of my thoughts on the matter. Hope you get some more input from others.
