My Gullible MIL

Having just read the post about dangerous animals by Kandase made me think about an event that has happened not once but four times to my Egyptian MIL, now she lives in a rural area of Egypt and her biggest fear is snakes,so this man knocks at her door carrying a sack, he then ells her that she has an Egyptian Cobra in her house and that he will remove it for her, for a fee, of course no questions asked she accepts , rushes out of her house and in he goes with hs sack, a short time later he comes out and from the sack produces the Cobra to show her ,she pays him 200 Egyptian pounds and is very grateful to him , anyway since then this man reappears almost yearly with the same sack and each time saves her from a snake, now no amount of telling her or her daughter that he has the snake with him when he goes in the house will persuade them that there is no Cobra in there before he enters the house , and that the man has conned them. My question is have you been conned and if so would you fall for the same con, more than once. Btw I dearly love my MIL.

The con man must be visiting when there is no one in the house who can challenge him.

No one in the village would challenge him as they believe he has magic powers, my MIL`s home is not the only one he visits.

An interesting story. If your MIL did have such a snake in the house, perhaps it is a good thing - they tend to avoid human contact, but do keep the local rodent population in check (no rats or mice!) I would ask to see the place where the guy trapped the snake, and ask to photograph the trapped creature - in the event he is using the same snake on every visit. The secret of a good con is that it works - not sure I would know if I had been conned, if the con was a good one... Good luck catching this guy out.

@shebish Maybe, if it is a ground floor apartment, he leaves the snake outside and retrieves it from a window or from a location in the back yard or garden...

I think it must be on his person somewhere, possibly in the sack already as no one checks the sack before he goes into a house, the contents of the sack are only revealed upon the suposed capture @pgntwo

We live in hope of proving he has the snake with him although my husband says that even if we can show MIL the snake he doubts she will accept that this man has no magic powers

I was shocked the first time it happened, really shocked the second especially as we had both spoken to her ,by the fourth time it had a sense of inevitability about it. There are some very smart crooks out there .

We all need to be very careful about who we let into our homes.

@valmnz It has been an eye opener for me,before I first met his family my husband did say his mum and sister had slightly traditional ways, I believe his words were.

I agree. My MIL believes the house of her late husband must always be open, otherwise it disrespectful to his memory ,

@shebish People can't be conned without their own consent. My guess is that she knows but she still finds the theatre of it all good fun.

@shebish We met a little boy who was very clever with getting us to swap an English coin for a US dollar I think. I can't remember the details now but he was pretty smart.

I find it hard knowing she has been conned and probably will be conned again , as for the conman it is more than likely a way of life that his own father would have taught him

I think in some ways we have all been conned without even knowing it has happened.
