hello has anyone heard about Has anyone heard about Bird Flu Protection Bird flu is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These flu viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, bird flu is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and kill them. You can click on the link above to know more about Bird flu ThanksThis is very interesting. We keep chickens and are worried about avian flu coming here because they are our pets but also as it can be passed to humans. Also of concern is that this may promote keeping more hens inside so as to prevent infection from migratory birds of those birds kept free range. The latest reports are stating that free range birds are going to be more at risk obviously than those in a controlled environment. My wife is local coordinator where we live for the Battery Hen Welfare Trust and as such is fighting for more welfare friendly systems of farming for hens but if avian flu hits hard here it will not encourage free ranging :(
