Favorite "Sun" Songs #6 - "Black Hole Sun"

I will swear on whatever you want me to swear on, but I swear, given today's news of vocalist Chris Cornell's suicide, this is a coincidence. #6 in my Favorite "Sun" Songs is "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden. Soundgarden is credited with being one of the bands that popularized the grunge movement of the 1990's. In fact, they were the first grunge band to sign with a major label. Their 1994 album, Superunknown, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, and spawned two Grammy winning singles, "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman." Soundgarden has sold over 22 million albums worldwide. Written by Chris Cornell, "Black Hole Sun" was the third single from that album (ironically, one of the B-Sides was an acoustic tune called "Like Suicide,") and did quite well for itself, spending seven weeks atop the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and peaked at #2 on that magazine's Modern Rock Tracks chart (despite not reaching #1, the song ended up as that chart's #1 track for 1994.) It also reached #9 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. Cornell claimed to have written the song in 15 minutes, and figured the band wouldn't like it. He also said that there was no idea to get across, rather, he wrote lyrics to fit the music. It has sold over three million copies worldwide. Not too bad for a tune written by a guy that had "no understanding" of what he had penned. R.I.P., Chris. I loved your voice. Thank you for the music.
