Today's results from the weekly golf tournament are as follows: rain took first, thundershowers came in second, and big puddles on hole #8 came in third. In other words, we didn't play. I've enjoyed a quiet night at home, for a change. Here's the next song on my list of favorite songs with the word song in the title.
#6: Just a Song Before I Go - Crosby, Stills, and Nash
If you want a list of my favorite albums of the 70s, the second Crosby, Stills, and Nash album, CSN, will be on that list. A genuine "supergroup," the trio consisted of Byrds member David Crosby, Buffalo Springfield member Stephen Stills, and Hollies member Graham Nash. They are all in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, as members of their original respective bands and as a member of this trio. (Their sometimes collaborator Neil Young is also in the Hall of Fame twice -- solo and Buffalo Springfield -- but not as part of this group.)
Harmonies. Holy cow, what harmonies. Gorgeous, gorgeous harmonies. This song, a huge hit for the trio in 1977, showcases that. Unlike their FM rock classic "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" ("Judy blue eyes" is Judy Collins, Stephen Stills' girlfriend at the time, if you didn't know), which clocks in at over seven minutes, this song is barely two minutes long. It's a song about being on the road and leaving a loved one ("going through security I held her for so long, she finally looked at me in love, and she was gone").
A personal PS -- I have a really embarrassing story about meeting Graham Nash in 1990. I'll spare you the boredom and me the humiliation.
This is one of the classics of CSN, and one of the classics of the 70s.

Thank you, but I played all weekend, so it's not that big a loss.

In 1990 CSN was playing at the Starwood Amphitheater in Nashville, and the BoDeans were playing at the fair on the grounds. I was there to see the BoDeans. After watching their soundcheck, I walked through the grounds to get something to eat, and I see Joe Vitale (CSN's drummer, also works extensively with Joe Walsh, co-writing "Rocky Mountain Way" with him). I called, "Joe Vitale!" as he walked past. He stopped and tuned, as did the man walking with him. I talked to Joe for two minutes and never acknowledged his friend.
It was Graham Nash.

@AliCanary -- I'll bet Vitale has never let Graham live it down.

@FourWalls -That's not so bad, and honestly I'll bet they both got a kick out of it.
