The long awaited Memorial Day weekend has finally arrived. Here in the states we honor those who have paid the ultimate price, given the last full measure of devotion, bought our freedom with their blood fighting evil; whether it be slavery, empirical ambition, fascism, communism, or radical terrorism. We honor their sacrifice by enjoying the freedom they earned for us. We go to the beach, we go camping, we go boating, we gather as family and friends, we host cookouts, and we remember that all we are able to enjoy is because of those men and women who are no longer here to enjoy it with us. And most importantly, we remember them, and raise our glasses, cups, bottles, and mugs in salute. We raise the flag, we place the flowers and wreaths, we listen to Taps, and we remember. This is why we celebrate as we do on Memorial Day. We are not ignoring the sacrifice of those who died securing our freedom; we are celebrating their lives and honoring their deaths by enjoying what they bought for us at such a dear price.

My thanks to your family members who served. Service has been a family tradition of ours for generations. My oldest son is carrying on the tradition.

Here! Here! Let that be an education for those from other countries who are totally ignorant and believe all we do is party on Memorial Day. Very well done, as usual.

Thank you. I see and hear so much from people condemning our enjoying ourselves on Memorial Day Weekend that I felt some explanation was warranted.

@DWDavis And thank you! I've seen it, too. Sigh! Again, well done. Too bad the ones who should see this probably won't.

I think it is great to be able to celebrate as a public holiday. We don't have a public holiday but I wish we did. We do celebrate rather solemnly though on the 11th of November armistice day. I would like to see this as a holiday but it would not necessarily be a Monday as the rest of our bank holidays mostly are. I hope you have a wonderful day catching up and remembering those who gave their lives for our safety!

We celebrate November 11 as Veterans' Day here. It was originally Armistice Day, but after WWII it was amended to include veterans of all wars. It is one of only two federal holidays that are not on Mondays. The other being Independence Day, which is always on July 4.

Maybe young people will appreciate the true meaning and not just think of this as just a fun long weekend.

My students understand. Each year I have them watch the National Geographic video about Arlington, and we listen to several songs such as "Some Gave All" and always finish with "Arlington" by Trace Adkins.

We often take the freedom we have for granted. We have it because of the men and women that stood the line. Our flag is flying. I am proud to be an American.
