Decluttering is really essential to have a healthy and hygienic life. It becomes an important and most time-consuming act in every household. Though involves a lot of labor it has got an immense value of its own. My personal experience with decluttering has taught me the five Golden Rules for decluttering to be kept in mind. 1. First, get rid of things which you have not used in a year 2.Sell, give away, recycle, upcycle, donate, or throw away 3.do not keep items that you would not buy now 4.Get rid of duplicates 5.Never keep items out of guilt

I have found my solution to getting rid of items, as everytime I watch Hoarders lots of boxes of stuff leaves my house by donating, tossing or selling. Hoarders is a television show that people should have dumped tons of stuff, but they didn't for many different reasons. I was shocked the first time I watched, as the house had stuff all the way to the ceiling in every room of the house. Now to talk about the items you listed #1 I don't do this one, as have a book collection and don't read them all in a year, but do reduce asome books when new ones come into the house. #2 I do this one every single week now, as if something comes into the house, then that same number or more must go, so the house doesn't get fuller. #3 I agree with the statement and that helped me get rid of many things this year. #4 I agree if you aren't using the duplicates, as I have several pairs of shorts that are exactly the same size and color and I wear them. Its great for washing, as just fill the washer and don't have to check the tags to clean them. #5 This one is the hardest on your list and I don't do this one well. It explains why I have a policy in my house that something has to go when something comes into my house. I have several boxes of items from loved ones that I can't part with the photographs and post cards from relatives traveling that have passed away years ago.

These are some great tips. We are trying to go through our things as our house is not big enough for everything that we have we went from living in a big house to a smaller house.
