I have played Guild Wars and like many players quit because there isn't much to do. The pvp aspect gets dull since Arenanet refuses to think of anything new.
Guild Wars which touted itself as a pvp game before the release of Prophecies required that pvpers play almost the whole game through before they could actually pvp. Prophecies was wonderful for pvers along with the updates of new areas and quests.
Factions was a let down in both aspects. The game was too short. The final boss was too simple and if just left you feeling like that was it? For pvpers Factions brought the Battle Isles with a few arenas pvpers had to conquer to reach Hereos Ascent.
Nightfall is wonderful for pvers. It has alot of quests and grind that if you are the questing type probably won't bother you. The story is well done and easy to understand unlike factions. They have even added a new god realm which has been a complaint from many players.
I have not played Wow but many people who were GWs players lose interest and migrate to Wow. I think that says something

With WoW, you've got that monthly subscription fee you've got to pay.
with Guildwars, you pay for the game and that's it. No monthly fees or pay-to-get-good-equipment fees.
If you're not too keen on the £15 monthly fee for World of Warcraft, I'd say start with Guildwars, as it's a lot more strategy based with it's low top-level of 20, so you've really got to work hard with your teammates. GW has a great storyline, and took me a lot of hours to complete (at least 30 to 40, I'd say)
WoW, on the other hand, has a much higher top-level, which I'm not sure what it is because I personally don't play it, but my Uncle does. :P It's not so much strategy based, but you've got a lot of quests and missions to attend to. Not sure on the storyline - whether or not it has one - so hopefully someone else will supply that information on another response.
That's my help to you! If you're loaded, WoW might be what you're after, but Guildwars is what I chose.
Or - why not both!? Mwahahahahahhaha!! :P

dude, no offense but for the storyline GW sucks.. If you're looking for an very enticing storyline then go for Warcraft.. not just World of Warcraft but Warcraft.. it's already in the market for over 10 years now and the story just keeps getting better and better.

Guild Wars but I think a better comparison would be Diablo 2 versus guild wars.

I've played world of warcraft but no guild wars, I've heard world of warcraft is better, but I'm sure it's a matter of opinion. The problem with World of Warcraft is the monthly payment, that's the reason I quit in the end. The community on world of warcraft is great though, it's alot more fun playing online games than offline I think now :)

the only good thing about GW is that it's free.. why is it free? because it doesnt have much to offer but the fact that it's free.
World of Warcraft and the Warcraft universe hands down!
