A Buddhist monk was sharing about his student days in a Buddhism seminar. He said that when he was in Primary 3, a teacher forced the students to do 3 good deeds a day, and wrote them in a journal. The teacher would read the journal of all the students every week. Since these were just students. They wrote about helping mother do housework, helping classmates with homework, etc. In a week, they would have accumulated more than 21 good deeds. After a year, all of them had the good habits of doing good deeds. Nearly all of them carried this habit into their adulthood. At the time of the seminar, the monk was over the age of 50. He said that they had done an informal survey of the achievement of all the classmates in the class. As a whole, the students who were forced to do 3 good deeds a day in their childhood were more successful in life than their peers. They were happier, and more successful in their family, career or business. The monk mentioned this as a lesson for everyone that giving does produce happiness, and that good habits are best cultivated when young, and carry on to adulthood.

I am sure that this is a true history, because giving is more satisfactory than receiving. They learnt to have a daily schedule and to find something every day to make people happy. A very good lesson of life.

It is his personal history. He mentions the name of the teacher, and the school. His classmates were the evidence too. I think the habit of doing at least 3 good deeds a day is a really good habit. When we are thinking about doing good deeds, we cannot at the same time contains thoughts of hurting someone.

@scheng1 I agree, thinking to 3 good deeds a day, keeps our mind busy thinking on something positive.

@LadyDuck It keeps students busy too! I think their mothers will be glad to have them washing the dishes too.
