Took the boys out this afternoon to do some metal-detecting and to spend some quality time. We had heard that a local road out by Hueco state park was actually the old Butterfield Trail. We headed out there and found a dirt road that was extremely rough riding. We followed it for as long as we could and then stopped and got out to try and see what we could find. The area was littered with spent rifle and pistol shells. None we found looked older than 10-20 years max. However we did find and extremely old railroad tie. Very crude looking and extremely weathered and rusted. After an hour or so of detecting we decided to take a small hike to a nearby tree line. Now if you ever seen the area around El Paso's desert you'll know trees are a rarity. Once we got there we noticed a small dirt tank for cattle and a few migratory water fowl had stopped over for a dip and sip. We explored the area and came accross a flock of Owls! Yes Owls. Strange that a bunch of them would be congregated in one brushy area. They were large variety and extremely secretive but we managed to see a few of them as they darted in and out of the brush. We noticed a few tracks of coyotes and deer by the waters edge. The sun was going down and a bit of a chill started to roll in so we made are way back to the truck and started home. Although we didn't find any real treasure as far as coins or relics we did find a slice of quality time together thats more valuable than anything material.

We actually did. It was extremely cool. I have been thinking about the flock of owls however. Thats extremely unusual. I would be willing to bet any ornithologist would absolutely love to tag a few of those birds and do an in depth study. I've come to realize its all about quality not quanitity. In todays society too many people are wrapped up in materialism and they have forgotten all about whats really important.
