The drama of UK politics

No screen writer in the world can write a drama of UK politics. It is full of twists and turns, and the show still goes on. Right from the time when Cameron called for a Brexit referendum till the snap election, UK politics has been holding the world in suspense. If ever a screen writer can write something as dramatic as this, he or she will easily win awards for being the best screenwriter. I pity the residents in UK. They are in for a very tough ride for a very long time.

I read the UK newspapers and the result of this vote is not at all a surprise. The Brexit will go on, but not in the strict terms that Mrs May suggested. It does not seem such a great drama.

This drama should be called the Brexit drama, starting with the Brexit national referendum. We are just midway through the entire drama. I think those in UK have not realized that it will be a hard Brexit no matter what. UK does not have the bargaining power, and they have not realized it yet. How can a single country hold more bargaining power than the entire EU? EU has more than 10 times the population of UK. EU will decide on whether UK has a hard Brexit or not. It can afford to lose UK market as long as it has access to the vast China, US and India market.

@scheng1 Instead of saying EU will decide, you can say Merkel will decide, because this is what happens in Europe right now. The other countries have very little to say, so they will watch what happens with UK. This will be a great help for the UK, because several European countries are not happy at all to be part of EU.

@LadyDuck Being in EU is costly, but being out of EU is even more costly. Greenland had chosen to leave EU, and now there are talks about re-joining EU. The pro-EU camp in Greenland argues that re-joining EU is for getting investments, and to diversity the economy from fishing. I think the governments in many EU countries are eyeing the jobs that will flow from UK to EU countries. They are not going to give UK a chance to keep all the jobs, and yet have access to the entire EU market.

When I read that this morning about Theresa May I thought she would have won outright with the publicity they have been giving her here. Now she is in the same predicament as was our current Prime Minister only much more difficult for her it seems. We thought it was difficult here and it still is but for ten whole months we all lived a suspense tale that never seemed to end and in reality it still goes on with the others forever seeking their own power.

The minute she called for a snap election, I know that she's not that good. She should count herself lucky that the terrorism acts were not as bad as those in Paris. The people in UK were right to blame her, since she had reduced the number of police when she was in charge. The number of police, firefighters, soldiers, doctors and nurses are among those occupations that should have an increment instead of reduction. I hope that UK can have a better PM to lead them post-Brexit. It is going to be hard.

@lovinangelsinstead21 That is the reality in nearly all countries. It is like the US voters having to choose between Clinton and Trump. It is a hard decision between a bad choice and a worse than bad choice, and they choose the worse than bad choice. I think the expectation for many of us is that we just have to choose the one who cannot do too badly as compared to the others.

@scheng1 We are really luck to have Mr. Rajoy as our Prime Minister and although looking from the outside in people might think otherwise you would have to know what the other two Parties get up to and how they think. For myself and their policy is not something I would cherish the thought of if they got in heaven forbid it. Anyway they are there and luckily they have not got their own way just yet.

I do not think that it is a drama, but a perfectly thought calculation. If you had read the Financial Times since a few weeks, you would have seen many people telling that they would vote Labor for the first time in their life because they would be able to get rid of Corbyn at the next election, while a hard Brexit would be there for 2 generations. My guess is that a weakened Theresa May will not be able to continue towards a hard Brexit, and many people did not want that for UK.

No matter how the election turned out, it will be a hard Brexit for them. It seems that they have not realized that they do not have the bargaining power. They should ask what can UK offer to EU instead of trying to make out as if they can control the terms of negotiation. The combined population of EU is at least 10 times that of the population of UK. EU can probably do without UK market, as long as they have access to China, US and India market. But UK cannot survive without access to EU market. I wonder when they will wake up to the fact that UK is actually not that important.

Seems to be the story of many of our countries. Not sure what people are thinking, if they are thinking at all.

@scheng1 Interesting times and things move so fast. Just wish one of our leaders would pause and think logically for a second. Nope, to hard apparently, reactionary world we are living in.

@scheng1 True, but I think what we need to do is start saying things like climate change is not real. That Brexit is a great move, Rich deserve more tax breaks. This way they do the opposite. That is what we seem to be doing the opposite of what would make our lives better. I mean we inventing coal jobs here in America. What is your country doing, bet it cannot top that.

@crossbones27 haha, you are right! We do not need this type of brainwash. This kind of training is best reserved for parrots. Perhaps you can send a few parrots over to us. The tourists will enjoy hearing the parrots repeat the mantras that "I do not believe in climate change, therefore climate change is not real", "Poor and sick deserve to die, and the rich deserve more tax break."
