Washing by hands or by washing machine? How do you wash your dirty clothes?

My mom loves to wash our dirty clothes by hands. She said the dirt on neck and underarms cannot be thoroughly cleaned by washing machine. However, when I am busy, I would prefer to use the washing machine. What do you prefer?

The skin on my hands are probably a bit more sensitive than others'. After a few washes (laundry) by hand, they get scraped and wounded, and that would hurt preventing me from being able to do laundry by hand again until after they heal. So I mostly do my laundry by machine. The only things I wash by hand are the delicate items (underwear, socks, handkerchiefs, etc.), and I try to space out my schedule for washing those so the skin on my hands don't become raw. If, for some reason, I have to wash some big items by hand, I use a brush instead of scrubbing with my hands.

@moirai I cannot handwash a lot of dirty clothes too. We do wash the dirty clothes every day or every other day. If we do not wash for a week, it will be too burdensome and my hands get wounded too.

@moirai Oh, yes. It is hard to dry clothes now because of the rainy season. But do you like the rainy season more?

@annierose I think the most frequent we can do here is every 2 or 3 days. While I use the washing machine, I rarely use the dryer. I prefer hanging the clothes on a line because I tell myself it will save a little little bit on electricity. Hahaha. But our clothesline is not in the sun so it's mostly air-dried. That might take a little longer than if it was under direct sunlight. Plus, it's the rainy season now so...

I have experienced the same. I've also realised that white clothes lose their whiteness and becomes little dirty white when washed by washing machine. So my mom prefer to wash white clothes by hands. I prefer washing washing machine only because after washing clothes for sometimes, you can take out the clothes and wash the collars and underarms and then put it back and then it'll be fully cleaned.

@_ge_ez_ While the other clothes are in washing machine, I wash other clothes with my hands. I remember when my siblings are not yet married, we spend almost the whole day washing the dirty clothes.

@annierose I put them in washing machine. Then in between we cleaned collars and underarms and also some spots if they are still there and then put it back, them cleaned with clean water, put it in drier. It almost takes maximum of 1.30 hour. I use washing machine because then i can do some of my other works and what about you ?

In India women wear saris and these are difficult to wash using a washing machine. I also find thick curtains difficult to put in a machine. On the other hand, I have even washed backpacks and shoes in a washing machine to try and get them clean!

@annierose it was just a freakish idea and seems to work. I hope it hasn't damaged my machine though. I turn down the spin speed

@pitstop Yes, I worry that it will damage the washing machine so I just separate the shoes and bags.

Never once did by hand, and i feel bad for all those who have to. Washing machines should be available to everyone.

@Courtlynn Got it. It is easier to wash clothes often than washing them all during the weekends.

@annierose i meant that everyone should have one and be able to afford to use them. Not doing laundry by hands. It goes by my electricity whoch isnt a high bill and we wash and dry in machines least 2 times every few days.

Our laundry is mostly done by washing machine but if it's just one or two small items like a face towel or undergarment I might hand-wash. Saves on time and cost. During my youth when washing machines were a luxury. We did our washing down by the river stream whenever I vacation in our hometown in the province.

I almost always use a washing machine. Occasionally we hand wash delicate clothes or some clothes with bad stains.

@pitstop If our uniform is white, mom used to hand wash it many times then bleach it then wash it again until it gets real white.

I used washing machine most of the time. Exception will go to items that not suitable for the machine, like my shoes. Otherwise I won't be bother to hand wash.

@prinzcy I see. The only disadvantage of using a washing machine I guess is that it adds to the cost of our electricity bill.

I did not grow up washing clothes hence I opted to do the laundry by washing machine. I just make sure though that whatever stains needs to be dunked will be treated prior to putting them on the machine. I sometimes try to wash out stuff from my kids clothes but I end up with painful hands. So I don't wash stuff too much by hands but by washing macihine using some of little tricks here and there.

@sublime03 The new thing I have learned from you today is about the vinegar solution. We haven't tried it yet.

@annierose Nothing new since I got them from the internet. My daughter loves to leave a stain on her cute clothes and I end up having to figure out how to remove fruit stains. I got a detergent to soak clothes to loosen up the stain and it magically poofs away! While for some tough stains, I need to do the vinegar solution to take it out. Of course it takes a few times of scrubbing it with the solution but it really works! There's a lot more of it I have tried and might take me all night to tell you.

I do the washing machine thing too, but it's gotta be the top load version, I have heard nothing but bad reviews on the front loaders. Although, since you mention washing clothes by hand, any tips or tricks on how to get the armpit odors out of clothes?

@librarygeek1980 We use zonrox when there is a stain. Sometimes, we just soaked those clothes with powder soap for 24 hours before we wash it again with our hands. And sometimes, we bleach them too under the sun.
