Why are jail bars vertical and not horizontal?

Do you know the reasons behind it? Is there any scientific reason or just for a good shape and design?

I don't think it's hard to figure out. When the bars are vertical, it takes much more strength to try to pull them apart. If they were horizontal, you could possibly use your legs to push down on one of the bars. Our legs are stronger than our arms.

Yeah you are right. That's only one reason or any other?

It is easier to bend them with your weight if they are horizontal I guess.
