I like using emojis especially for happy expressions, however, I am not very convinced using them to express that I feel sad for something, when someone messages me or posts in social sites...
I personally feel the emojis are a kind of light emotions and I dont really feel like using them to show that I feel sad for someone for a bad situation of theirs....
If its a post on a general topic, which is sad I feel ok to use these sad emojis, but definitely no if someone is expressing some sad incident that happened in their own life...

I don't see a difference between a sad general topic and a sad personal incident. For me, as long as the emoji used is appropriately sad, then it's fine. Don't use a happy emoji for a sad moment.
For me, emojis, in general, help add a visual representation of the writer's mood. Because sometimes that is not easily conveyed through text only messages. This is the difference between communication only over the internet or text, versus face to face where we have visual (we can see the other person's facial expression and body language) and audio (we can hear the tone of their voice) clues.

I feel emoticons could be used to their best during chat conversations.. I rather use symbols :-) over smileys

I love emojis... Best way to express, especially when you end up with a I Don't know answer or confused
