No Day at the Beach

It was a hot weekend. The sun beat down relentlessly, the mercury rose silently. With temperatures hovering at 96F, large numbers of locals fled their stuffy houses and gathered near the shores of the Atlantic at any beach with sufficient parking. Most of them had a fun-filled day at the beach. Except for beachgoers at one beach. Their fun in the sun was interrupted by a body washing up on shore. The Girl had gone off with friends for a day at the beach with her friends. I knew from Facebook posts that she was in a close area. I hoped it wasn't her beach that the body washed up on. They have now identified the body as being that of a man lost at sea last week, when his boat capsized. Very sad, but at least now his family has answers and can bury their loved one. Two men were on the boat, one managed to swim to a nearby jetty. The other drowned. Neither were wearing a life jacket. I guess it's a lesson about knowing what you are doing and taking the necessary precautions before setting out to sea. But it's a lesson too late for this poor, drowned man. Whether you go swimming or boating, remember that the ocean is not a backyard pool. It's unruly and unpredictable, and no, you're not a good enough swimmer to save yourself.

Very good advice for summer holidays @Rollo1 Incidents like these are bound to happen to someone, somewhere. One needs to be very cautious. Parents especially need to warn their kids of impeding danger.

My mother constantly yelled at us when we were in the water at the beach, warning us to not go in past a certain depth. But, having been a child, I can say that children never listen.

I am very sorry. I am unable to swim and I would always wear a life jacket, even to enter the backyard pool.

It's good to know your abilities and limitations. It's not good to take chances.

@Rollo1 I suppose that I can float even without a jacket, but I would never take my chance.

To be honest... the ocean scares me. I go in up to my ankles and that is about it!

I wouldn't have thought you could get to the ocean in Winnipeg. It makes a difference, though, whether or not you've been swimming in the ocean all your life or if you experience it later after you are used to another type of swimming. The waves at some beaches can be so high and knock you over, but some other inlets offer a calmer sea that you can swim in.

A body washing ashore would certainly spoil the day at the beach. The poor man and his family.

Yes, a sad ending to a pleasure outing.

Same reason some people won't wear seatbelts. They have the right to take chances, but what they do will affect others if they die.

That's sad. One of my cousins (I never met him) drowned in a lake. He supposedly was a great swimmer, but the water was too much for him.

I find it harder to swim in a lake. There's no natural buoyancy like there is in the ocean. The ocean water is salty and it's much easier to float - as long as the surface is calm, that is.

There are laws about life jackets on boats and my husband is religious in following them

You are so right, no-one can tame the sea.

The sea is wonderful, but it's more powerful than people realize.

What is sad is that often the rescue teams get into danger when they want to save a drowning person who has overestimated their strength.

Swimming in the ocean is a lot more dangerous than most people realize. I'll play in the water at the beach but I reserve my swimming for the pool.

You're right, people don't realize how hard it is to swim very long in choppy water.
