Searching for a job...

In a fairy tale world someone will knock on your door and say something like "You're hired! Your job starts tomorrow..."
In the real world that is never going to happen.
You have to submit resume after resume to available positions in hopes that it will get noticed by hiring personnel and you get called on an interview, which in turn can get you hired.
You can't just send out resumes to every position out there. It has to be something you are at least partially qualified for. But a lot of job descriptions are so sophisticated and complex these days that they can make you feel like you are not qualified for the position when in reality you may be a good fit. And searching through hundreds of pages of job listings, in hopes of finding fitting ones to apply for, can be frustrating, annoying and depressing.
How do you figure out what you want to do for a living and what to apply for? How do you narrow down the job listings? Please share your tips and suggestions...

I've had the same job for 30 years so I wouldn't even know how to begin looking for a new job. I wish you the best of luck. I hope you find the perfect job soon.

Thank you. Thirty years is a very long time to be in one company. That's certainly a success as I'm sure it's not easy to last that long in one place for a person... The most I've stayed in a company was about a year. I was either laid off or went to pursue a better job opportunity.

@Happy2BeMe It would be great if I could finally land something that pays very well and I enjoy doing at least somewhat and find rewarding and am able to stay there for a very long time....

I find it easy to get hired but, I sometimes hate people so badly, I don't stay.
That's just how it is for me. I wish you luck.

If it were easy to get hired that would be a great thing... Some people land jobs easily while others do not.

@lovebuglena well, I can be very charming, see. And, as is often the case with very charming people, we're very often full of it.
I'm working on these things, btw, in my effort to unlearn...

I've been searching and sending out resumes but toward the end of last year I stopped temporarily because I haven't figured out what to focus on. I have to figure out a career path and go for that, not just send out resumes to anything out there... But that is hard for me to figure out right now, so I have paused the search. However, I need to get back into it because savings eventually run out.

My f/t job was many years ago... That's a very long break for me. And it didn't do anything good for me because a lot of companies don't like people with long gaps of unemployment. Having not had a f/t job for so long goes against me rather than helps me.

I'm no longer in the rat race. I have sifted through pages of job listings. I had worked customer service and there were a lot of those available, but I had to sift through location and their qualifications. Since I started in customer service so much had changed including needing a degree now in it, which I don't have, so I had to eliminate 9/10ths of what was out there.

@lovebuglena Yes it is, a frustrating job that doesn't always lead anywhere.

Looking through pages and pages of job listings is definitely hard and a job in itself. Some people say that finding a job is a job and they are right.

I think no matter where a person lives it's hard to find a job, especially when a person is looking for something very specific and not just anything that's available out there.

I know that many others are in the same boat. But that doesn't make me feel better because it doesn't change my situation. :(

You are so right. I feel like most jobs coupd just be trained to us, instead we need all of these weird qyalifications to get it. I am currently looking for a different job within my organization, so searching is pretty easy as there arent many openings. I will sometimes apply for a job I dont feel completely qualified for too.

If I got my foot in the door somewhere where I didn't need all these qualifications or experience and I'd be trained in what I had to do I'd try that out, as long as it wasn't sales related.

Hi. I can understand your search for a career can take some time. I personally checked out different jobs with different occupations. I also went to the employment office to see what jobs were hiring. Some places will provide classroom training. For example say you want to be a welder you maybe able to take training to become one. Another idea is to see if they offer free training to become a Nursing Assistant. This is hard work while the pay is between 11.00 and 13.00 after you get hired.I ask is your resume up to date? Does it have sufficient work history? Do you have the necessary education for the job that you want? Have you done an internship for the kind of job that you are pursuing?
There is one other thing that employers do and that is a credit check for your credit score and payment history. This is to see if you paid bills on time. The employers sometimes will not hire applicants due to a low credit score.I hope this helps you and to give you ideas on how to find your career.

I never heard of employers checking an applicant's credit score and payment history... That is strange. I wonder why whether you can pay bills on time or not should have an impact on someone being hired.

I love writing! Would be great to get to do that for a living. But I cannot be a journalist. And being a published author doesn't pay the bills. So, I have to figure out something else to focus on and I have no idea what that should be. It's not about what I'd love at this point. It's about finding something that pays well and that will allow me to grow and succeed... I wish I knew what that is.
