TV Review - Dexter Season Six

Spoiler alerts Many fans feel the TV series about Miami serial killer Dexter Morgan seriously jumped the shark (went rubbish) after five great seasons. It was actually still very good but stretching credibility as to how Dexter could still keep getting away with it after so long. Dexter is an unusual serial killer in that A/. He is a forensics expert working for the Miami Police, in a department run by his own step-sister, Debra. B/. Dexter only kills other serial killers. Season six was a game changer. The main killers pursued by the cops and Dexter are an apparent cult, The Doomsday Killers, who use killings modelled on the Book Of Revelations in the build up to a total eclipse. The killings are very like those in the movie Seven. Victims have snakes sewn into them, and the killers attack the police with a plague of locusts. The big surprise is that there is only one Doomsday Killer as the crazed guy has long since killed the partner and keeps his corpse in a freezer. He does briefly recruit two accomplices and somehow brainwashes them virtually overnight. Some other unlikely touches. The lone-killer somehow organises very elaborate murders that should take a whole team to organise, especially the stunning Four Horsemen ride where a single victim is seen careering through the streets of Miami on a cart drawn by four horses, each in the colours described in the Bible. The sub-plot of the previously very efficient Quinn descending into alcoholism and unprofessional-ism but still somehow not getting fired is extremely unlikely. The ending is the real twist as Dexter dispatching the Doomsday killer in his usual murderous style is witnessed by his doting step-sister who now finally knows what he is like. It is a strong season overall, but the cops are portrayed as missing vital clues that Dexter is smart enough to see right away. Not a full jumping of the shark, but certainly weaker than previous seasons. Not a series I usually like. To typical in a way. Police, killers, blah blah. Dexter clearly made the show. It was a bit quirky for me, but done in such a smart way. I personally think they tried to combat all these forces that were always going to be against the show, the ending worked great. I personally loved it and you would have to watch every episode of every season just to see how hard they tried to keep it alive Really great stuff from a show that could have easily went nowhere. Show has heart and tells a different perspective. Love that stuff.

@arthurchappell I always say, not always what we expect but the Dexter series was so well done it could be the next Game of Thrones in that genre. No detective series will ever beat Game of Thrones, but can be the best of its class. Of course we do already have The Wire and if you have not seen, one of the best shows you will ever see. Game of thrones in reality from a street stand point. Hard to beat what they have done lately. I think people are going to have to come to a realization, people perfected crap. Music. Movies, business, all done to great efficiency. Yet still no soul, except for a few. No soul meaning the people running the show. The working always have a soul because they see it everyday. The rich see nothing.

I agree with you about this show. I really enjoyed watching it and I felt so bad for Dexter. I was sad too because I knew something bad would be happening to him. I don't think they totally jumped the shark, but they are beginning yo lose credibility.

Dexter peaked with the John Lithgow season and deteriorated afterward.

@JohnRoberts I agree, the Lithgow Trinity killer season was the best

As it happens, I just started rewatching Dexter from the beginning. It's been long enough that I've forgotten enough details to enjoy it. I of course remember the big picture. I like the shows that are basically dark but have the dark comedy in them, like Dexter and like The Sopranos. I don't like being relentlessly just horrified. I do remember the Trinity season being my favorite.

I liked Dexter, but it did get carried away with itself a lot as the years progressed. I found the final finale to be not to my liking, but ho-hum.
