I have suffered from osteoporosis for many years, it cannot be stopped but you can slow the process by taking calcium rich foods/drinks and calcium tablets. Weight bearing exercise is a good idea until you get to the point where you can't do it, but this must be done under supervision of medical staff.
Osteoporosis is hereditary so take care of children from birth and make sure they get thier quota of calcium.

Osteoporosis cannot always be prevented, as it can be hereditary. You can, however, have less of an impact of it if you take the proper steps. Unfortunately, not everyone knows (or cares) that this process would have to begin in childhood, possibly infancy.
