I'm glad I didn't have plans to go to the water park today. It was a very comfortable 77 degrees when I did my post-lunch walk near the mall. Unfortunately, we aren't going to hold on to that for tomorrow and the golf tournament. So I can think about water parks then...but I can always post another song from my list of favorites that have "water" in the title. Here's the next song.
#5: Flying Over Water - Jason Isbell
Jason Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers. He had a nasty drinking problem as he spiraled downward, leaving the band and starting his own band (the 400 Unit, supposedly named for the psychiatric ward at a hospital). He decided to get sober; and, in order to remember his treatment and the things he'd gone through so he wouldn't be tempted again, he put things into songs.
The result was 2013's Southeastern, which was on just about every single "best of" list (and usually in the top three) for the year. It is a painful album at times to listen to, with the songs dealing with cancer ("Elephant"), sexual abuse ("Yvette"), and the downs and downs of drinking (I previously mentioned his humorous approach to post-concert parties in the song "Super 8"). But you know something? Most "difficult-to-listen-to" albums are usually the best ones.
This song deals with insecurities (the chorus of "take my hand, baby we're over land, I know flying over water makes you cry"). The opening line, "From the sky we look so organized and brave," is a killer.
The entire song is. I'm so glad I got to see Isbell on this tour.
