School is out! Our ice princess had her last day of third grade last Friday, although New York City public schools ended this week. Why early? Her summer sleep away camp began Saturday.
She flew on the camp plane to Maine all by herself for the second year in a row and was met by the camp bus. This will be her third summer with friends old and new.
Of course she will practice her ice skating every morning with one of her former New York City coaches that the camp hired. She will continue with horseback riding, water skiing, sailing, swimming, and signed up for archery, softball, soccer, and other land sports. She loves that camp!
When was the last time you flew alone? I was 12 and flew across the USA from New York to California.

Other than flying across the room after tripping over a hair in the carpet, that is the only flying I have ever done.
Your granddaughter will be quite busy with all she is planning on doing at camp.

Oh gosh it seems like not too long ago that we were hearing about her going to summer camp . . . I can't believe it's that time again (time flies, seriously). Hope she has a great time again this year! Can you believe I've only flown once (well twice if you count the flight home) . . . it was with family and I was probably around 14!

Wow sounds like she'll have a great summer. I flew alone on a plane for the first time when I was around 16 from California to Indiana.

@DianneN Is her brother going to a camp too? I would be scared traveling alone too, but now kids are so much mature and they have electronic gadgets to keep them busy! Hehe.
Yes, I was super nervous. Even the guy asked to switch seats with me because he wanted the window. He was on his laptop seemed like he was tracking the airplane status. I was quite nervous!

@infatuatedbby No electronics allowed in camp except her iPod for music. They even have to wear uniforms to keep materialism down to nonexistent. Lots of famous/wealthy parents send their daughters to this camp. Yes, her brother is going to camp, too. That's another post! lol
Poor you! I'm sure it was as scary for you as it was for me.
My father put me on the plane. I sat next to a nice lady who told me that there was nothing to worry about. Then, she started crying because she was so nervous! lol. I certainly thought I'd crash coming home, because I had seen the best of what life had to offer a 12 year old - Disneyland!

I flew from Hartford to Montreal for a business meeting in my 20s, that was the first time I flew in a commercial airplane, My uncle took us for a private plane ride when we were kids, me and my brother Alain. It sounds like the ice princess has a great summer planned.

The first--and only time--I have ever flown alone was when I was 12 also. I flew from Miami, Florida to Anchorage, Alaska to stay with my aunt and uncle for the summer. It was a 13-hour flight, including changing planes in Seattle. I don't remember being nervous, scared, or even bored on the 13-hour flight, so it must have been a pretty good (or at least uneventful) flight. At the end of the summer, when I returned home to Florida, my aunt and uncle accompanied me on the flight.

@DianneN Yes, I had to have lots of help, because at 12 years old I didn't understand layovers and changing planes. I couldn't understand why they just didn't re-fuel the plane I was on and then let us continue on our way. Of course, at 12 I didn't understand that the plane I was on was not an Alaska-bound plane, but a Seattle-bound plane. I just assumed that you get on the plane, and it takes you directly to where you need to go! haha

Wow! You can't say she won't be busy at camp. She looks great in that picture.
The first time I flew was alone on my way to Boot Camp in 1972 to Baltimore, MD. Boot camp was in Bainbridge. That training facility closed with mine and my sister company's graduation 10 weeks later.

@DianneN They wouldn't have done that. Boot Camp was fun, it had it's moments, and I did miss out on a couple of trips - particularly the one to Washington DC, but that was my fault. I've mentioned I'm not the neatest person around. I always missed putting something away, and it was always a demerit. So when it came to the DC trip I was working off demerits instead.

I envy the IP for getting to enjoy such a wonderful summer camp. It sounds much like the camp my sons went to and eventually worked at when they were younger, except for the ice skating.
The last time I flew alone I was in my late 20s, flew from Bradley International in Windsor Locks to Fort Lauderdale for the National Lab Retriever Club annual meeting ( I think it was). Soon, though, I will be flying alone from Raleigh to Houston to meet up with my youngest son so I can drive back to NC with him when his internship is over.

I'm sure your sons had fabulous summers. I know it would be a wonderful way to spend the summer and earn some money when she's old enough.
I know Bradley! We've used it many times to fly, especially to Fort Lauderdale. Ah, Houston in the summer! I'm sure your son will be happy his internship will be over. Safe travels!
