Hello guys, yesterday I noticed my friend deactivated his facebook account. When I asked him why, he told me that he is bothered seeing the posts of his secondary schoolmates being successful in life while he isnt satisfied with what he has now.
Do you agree that this social media could really be this bad to people?

Yes I agree because I learned that Facebook can cause depression in the sense that it causes people to compare themselves to others and that is what can lead to having low self esteem. I remember reading and article about it when I took a communication and society online psychology class.

When I first went on facebook I was not impressed then i started to make friends that believed the way I did and I was on alot and then realized it is too addicting so then i got bored with it and would come and go. I mostly go on now to write messages to friends and see what the posts are. It depends on why people are on facebook in the first place. I think it depends on the person. I really cannot answer for anyone but myself. When I have friends that I write to write me back then I go on to see if they answered me and there have been times I was bored and it was too political but there are times I enjoy some of the posts.

It's only one case, one example, one human life. I don't think that FB could lead to depression.

Actually, I disagree. I was home bound this year for the first time and I was really feeling bummed out about it. Facebook has really helped me get my happy demeanor back. I think that if you chat about depressing things, it really won't help your depression. Chat about happy and exciting things.

Yes, spending too much time on Facebook and seeing that many people we are connected with are so successful and happy, or at least they seem to be, can be really frustrating, so I understand your friend's decision to close his account. However, I also think that social media has its good parts because it allows us to keep in touch with people we care about and whom we can rarely see in person because of the distance that separates us from them, so if I were your friend I would not close my FB account, but I would simply unfriend those people whose posts made me feel frustrated and depressed and limit myself to communicating with a smaller number in the company of whom I would feel comfortable.
