Did my non-speaking kid really utter a full sentence?

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I'm working at the preschool with a kid who understands everything but doesn't speak. He's 2 1/2, and very attached to me. On Wednesday, while building sand houses together, I said to him: Am I Noah (his name)? He laughed and said no. I said, Are you Horse? He laughed and said no. I said, Am I Horse? He said yes. I said are you a turnip? He laughed and said no. I said, what's your name? He said No-ah. It was the first time I'd heard him say his name. Later, I was helping him take a wet shirt off. It got stuck on his chin. His face was hidden in the shirt. I said, I can't find Noah! Where's Noah? From under the shirt I heard, I am Noah! My little buddy is starting to speak!

@nanette64 I wonder what his next sentence will be. I think he's trying to say, "I want that one."

It really is. I find working with the littlies to be really satisfying because their progress is so tangible. But I'm really in it for the hugs.

@crazyhorseladycx It can be satisfying. But you can't imagine the poopy diaper I changed on this kid today. He was singing the ABC song without words (I sang along) and I was dealing with some Pennsylvania river overflowing.

He's so adorable. I wish I could convey what it feels like when he grabs my hand and wants to show me something.

If only I could get that much satisfaction from my job. You must be absolutely over the moon. 'Well done' seems woefully inadequate.

@TheHorse Software development for the automotive industry. The corporate world is leaving me increasingly empty and dissatisfied with every additional day I spend in it. This is why I'm looking to retire at 55 (2 years, 8 months and 11 days - not that I'm counting) and maybe do some voluntary work for an animal rescue centre.

awww, that is awesome! Ya know we used to do the name game with the babies, just to make them giggle and for them to talk. I had a great niece that stuttered and I helped her get over it, but since I babysat her all the time it was easy plus we were best friends too, its nice to have a 3-4 year as a best friend. You brought back memories from 30 years ago.

How did you help her get over stuttering? Yes, I think it helps to be "buddies" with someone you're working on something with.

He did it again today. So I think it's real. But I couldn't get him to do it in front of his dad.

Hi. I think its great you are helping a child to thrive in his speech while it seems you are very close to him as he is to you. You words of inspiration show you are helping Noah grow in life and making a difference in yours.

Our kids, overall, have been fairly trying over the past few days. A lot of energy that we haven't quite been able to "corral." But several of the one-on-one interactions have been really special for me.
