The African Elephant

In 1980, in Zaire, there were about 370,000 African elephants. The largest number in any African country. But now, that number is shrinking rapidly because of poaching.
I found some interesting information that you might want to read.
Poaching is illegal and could be stopped entirely if everyone would STOP BUYING items made from Ivory and other elephant parts.

Who wants stuff from ivory anyway? And it's expensive so it's mainly rich folks fault.

I have seen lots of Ivory items in China Town in San Francisco.

Stopping to buy those items is the logical part but then who is ever entirely logical. Plus when these items are up for sale not everyone knows where they came from. Most likely the safest place for these elephants would be in a nature reserve or national park. Do poachers also capture elephants in the parks?

Some parks are hundreds of acres and YES, poachers can do their dirty work in the parks. These huge parks cannot be watched from every corner day and night. There are not enough guards to keep the poachers out.
