Religion according to sociologists a man made institution like marriage and family. God and religion play a very important role in the society although its origins are yet to be proved. Having said that ,the very foundation of this institution rests on belief and unshakable faith . Personally, I am not a very religious person although I respect traditions and customs as long as they are not anti social and harmful to others.

I will say that I was raised Roman Catholic in the church and school both..8 yrs elementary and it is steeped into me. However, I am always open to other viewpoints. Other religions, cultures can be fascinating. I am very open.

Yes Tiara, Basically all religions teach the same thing but it is the customs and traditions that vary depending on the region .I studied in a convent and so did my children. India is multi religious society which has its own advantages ..

@kiran8 I forgot to answer the other half of your question sorry Kiran. It has helped me immensely in imparting discipline in life which is needed if you are to accomplish difficult tasks. It has also imparted an understanding of the word compassion, for instance, not looking down on others.

@TiarasOceanView Tiara , that's wonderful , I guess that is the essence of all religious teachings which most followers overlook and concentrate on trivialities

I respect all religions equally. I think all religions have been badly mutilated, corrupted, trampled, what nots, without any exception, by unscrupulous people, greedy people, cowardly people, high handed people, cruel people, etc., so believing in religions with characters is becoming beyond me. I also feel part of that mutilation etc., is manifested as rituals. So I am against ritualistic stuff. Speak to god from heart, he listens.

You are so very right @vandana7 , I feel the same about religion. In fact all religious institutions have their roots in violence , intolerance and dominance. It has taken different forms but the core still remains the same .

I am religious and spiritual and it is very beneficial to me to have faith because it has helped me through so much of the bad and made the good even better. I love church and singing in gospel choir and reading scriptures and doing solos. It is a source of love, acceptance, and goodness.

I also tend to believe that religion binds people together , especially those who have a common belief and faith ..

@kiran8 Hinduism. It has influenced me in many ways, the best being it gives me the independence to follow it in my own way, not following any rules

I should say I consider myself a man full of "religiosity", is that to say, I have a "tendency" towards religious things or sacred situations, studies or behaviors. I do also consider religion a kind of institution, when it leads to capitalism and it is used in ways that are not proper of "religiosity". I follow some patterns of a Brazilian religion called Umbanda, and I like to practice what it is proposed by it: "unconditional love for everyone" serving as a channel helping people/animals wherever they are. (This is a simple way to describe it, but to talk about anything religious, it would take pages and pages, as well as years!) Nice topic of yours and wish you a lovely day!

Thanks a lot , Religion and religious beliefs have become very deeply rooted into people's lives so much so that we cannot imagine a society without it. There are of course many negative factors as well
