This Neil Diamond song about the joys of indulging in red wine was not a major hit for him. “Red Red Wine” was on his 1967 album “Just For You” and stalled at Billboard #62. A reggae spin would take the song to the top.
UB40 is a reggae/ska giant and 80s new wave staple. The band comprised of diverse musicians formed in Birmingham in 1978 and named themselves after Unemployment Benefits Form #40. The album “Labour of Love” was a cover collection including “Red Red Wine.” Besides a reggae flavor, band member Astro added lyrics:
“Red red wine, you make me feel so fine
You keep me rolling all of the time”
The 1983 release received heavy alternative radio play and peaked at #34. After UB40 performed “Red Red Wine” at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday party concert, the re-release of of the single shot to #1 in 1988.
UB40 continues performing though founding members split into competing outfits. Diamond loved it and sings UB40’s version in his concerts.

I'll scare everyone even more than telling people it was written by Neil Diamond. The first "single" or charted recording of it.....was a country version.

A really interesting band who have had a phenomenal number of hits in the UK but their three number ones here and two in the US were all with covers of 60s songs. The split of the original eight members into two bands has been extremely acrimonious, especially as different Campbell brothers are involved in each.

I had no idea Diamond performs their version in concert. Why not? More people know their version, and it made him even richer than he already was.

People usually don't know what the original version is...but when a song is good is always good
