No Big Bad Snakes! Hiss!

There is a section in my yard that seems to be full of goodies for Doodles, the cat. It's close to the woods where he loves to hunt mice, moles, and chipmunks. While he is patient, I get bored easily, so I pull weeds. I must have disturbed a nasty snake, because Doodles suddenly hunched down and backed away. When I saw it, I screamed like a wild woman. I yelled, "No Big Bad Snake. They Hiss!" Doodles jumped off all four paws and ran away to safety with me. He still returns to that area, but leaves immediately when he hears those magic words. I think we are both terrified of snakes. Are you? Photo is of Doodles in the front yard trying to hunt Chippy, to no avail. Thank goodness.

Wild woman . Ah, so you do get snakes out your way! I don't mind snakes, but then again I never have to deal with them (I don't see them in our area, but of course the mailman apparently spotted one coming out from our yard the other day - and I didn't have to deal with it ).

@much2say Oh, yes, right! I'm so very lucky! NOT! Send them here for the summer. They can find all the critters they want. Of course, I will be staying with you. I can't stand slithering snakes.

@TiarasOceanView I was very relieved. He wants to reschedule, but time will tell. I chipped a tooth in Florida and had it repaired last month. It was no big deal, which surprised me. He is good friends with his dentist, who happens to be a cousin of my daughter in law. Small world!

@LovingMyBabies Lol! I was in the pool and my hubs was sitting on the edge of it when he casually pointed out a big black 4 foot long snake close to the pool in a garden area about four years ago in Florida. I flew out so fast screaming and shivering. I didn't go in that area for three weeks. The pool man told me they were harmless garden snakes. OMG!

Oh , yes, I am so afraid of snakes, even those non-venomous ones. I can see some children or persons holding the Albino snake. Never will I hold that. So you mean , when a snake doesn't hiss, it will not bite?

@DianneN Doodles know the sound of a hissing snake. At least, you know that he will not be beaten by a snake because he runs away immediately.

I think if a snake hisses, it's getting ready to attack. I can't stand to look at them, even baby snakes. They are hideous creatures! I tell Doodles HISS, and he runs away from that area now. lol

@DianneN - One of daughters had a pet milk snake when she was a teen. It was my least favorite of all the pets we had. As for snakes in the wild, they are all "bad snakes" as far as I'm concerned.

@DianneN - Ha Ha! My favorite photo of my daughter as a teen is her standing in the living room, wearing a black evening gown, while she waited for her date to prom to pick her up. She had her snake wrapped around her arm while she waited ... Cleopatra style! Fortunately, she could not take it to the dance! LOL

@DianneN "But then we have snow and cold and ice and that is no fun either." But now that I think about it, I would take Montreal winters over snakes any time. Now, my daughters must have taken after their grandfather whom I saw kill a number of snakes when I was a kid as they have no problem holding and petting a snake. Whenever I have come across a snake, I just head in the opposite direction. I have no intention of petting one or getting close enough to kill one.

it is a surprise that our neighbors at the back saw some snakes slithering away from them, and they said there were 4. i remember my late mother telling me (i saw about 4 big brown snakes crawling away from me when i was in high school),to not comment on the snakes because they might multiply. when i told my sister about that (so our neighbors won't comment on them), the next thing they said to us already was, there are no more snakes at the back.
