Protein Shakes

Hi
I've started going to the gym (crossfit) twice a week and im trying to decide if i should bother with protein shakes. They are expensive and im not really sure which type i should buy.
Is there a particular type of protein that is good for beginners?
should i only take it on the days I exercise?
There is so much information on the net about suppliments im not really sure where to start...does anyone have an experience with them? Good/bad?

Good job! How are you liking Crossfit? I hear that is a great workout. I personally eat protein bars to suplement my protein. Target or Walmart sells a decent brand that is 200 calories with 20 grams of protein. I think its called Pure Protein and not super expensive!
