Plane trees or plain trees?

It’s interesting to see the different customs or ‘fashions’ in each of the regions we’re travelling through in France. We haven’t seen too many decorated roundabouts lately but avenues of trees leading into and out of towns have now become common.
Vince says they are plane trees but I think they’re not plain at all but very attractive. (That’s a joke.) In Western Australia, our small towns have all taken to announcing themselves too with attractive entry signs. Perhaps, if your town has something special to say ‘you are here’, you might like to share it.

"... have *now* become common." --- I'm surprised about the word 'now'. Roads with trees on either side have always been common in Europe. In some areas, the trees have been cut off because the roads are too narrow for the traffic of today.
In summer such roads can be a nuisance for drivers. When the sun is shining, there is a constant change of bright light and shadow because of the leaves. That can be irritating. There is even a traffic sign warning drivers.

even though i don't drive, i can imagine the situation you're describing here. would wearing sunglasses help?

@hereandthere No, it wouldn't. If you drive at a certain speed, the change between bright light and shadow is very quick and irritating.
In Italy, there is a similar situation where the motorway runs through a mountain range. The engineers have built a half-open tunnel so-to-speak. You see a solid wall of rock on one side of the motorway and the open - sunny - landscape through large holes on the other. As the speed on motorways is fast, the quick change of bright light and shadow makes you dizzy.

As a child, I always wondered why they were called plane trees. What, I thought, could they possibly have to do with aeroplanes? I don't remember ever thinking that they might be 'plain' or, perhaps, that they were a tree that was called that because they grew on plains. That's odd, perhaps: I suppose that, by the time I knew the name, I already knew how it was spelled and knew that 'plain' and 'plane' were two quite different words.
I believe that the word 'plane' is a corruption of the Latin name 'platanus' (but then why aren't they called 'plate trees'?) but it actually comes from the Greek word 'platos' meaning 'broad' (referring to the leaves, I believe) - the same word from which we get 'plate' and 'platitude', I think.

this is the first time i've come across the term 'plane trees' (not even in print materials), and was wondering if judy would mention airplanes in her discussion.

Thanks for that information. It's fascinating how some of these plants and animals get their names.

@AbbyGreenhill The competition is run every year and I think it has helped reduce the amount of litter. They have days where volunteers clean up the roads into their town, etc.

We have a sign that crosses the street, like a bridge, that reads "Historic Manitou Springs" at the city limit.

@teamfreak16 I hope it's a nice high sign. I've got a bit paranoid about low signs and bridges lately.

What? The sign doesn't include "Home of America's #1 Mission Fan"!

There are one or two Roundabouts here but I could not get to photograph them as they were on an awkward angle for me
Usually they are mainly flowers and stuff with stonework in between.
I will see if I can get a photo or two of them when I can.

Where I live ,we once lined the streets with plane trees, now we have replaced them with camphor trees, because many people are allergic to the fruit hair of plane trees.

It seems a place thinks up a nice idea and suddenly other towns decide they'd like to do something similiar.

This little town I live in now had an old part and its lined with huge homes that date back into the 1800`s. My home town has a media filled with Crepe Mertle trees.

Oh, these trees are not related to airplanes or something? These trees grew up well in France, must be the climate

No, they have nothing to do with aeroplanes. I think the climate here must suit the very well.
