Forgetfulness – Is it a problem for you?

Dear friends,
I had an impression that this is an age related problem. I have the habit of forgetting things quickly after doing it. For example, at times I may close the office (as other staff may leave early) but on reaching bus stop, I can’t remember whether I locked the door. Usually I just leave the office as other staffs were present. On getting the additional responsibility of locking the office, I become confused.
It is obvious that there is no chance of leaving office wide open. But I can’t remember on reaching bus stop, whether I locked the office. Then I recollect my activities at the time of leaving office, still at times I can’t recollect the particular incident ‘locking the door’.
Weird, isn’t it? Once I shared this problem to a youngster and she also told me she too has the same problem. She even go back to check things at home after leaving for office.
How about you?

Yes it is coming on me lately..I believe it is stress related. I surely do not like the feeling and knowing that something is happening to my mind. I never used to be like this. I wish I knew a way for you and I to improve it.

@TiarasOceanView Another reason we may think on some other things while doing the works, it may be reason for it.

I have two things to tell you on this discussion...
1. Many things we do every day or often become so ingrained that we no longer thing about doing them. It becomes a habit. Most people don't remember doing things that are habitual for them to do.
That is not a memory problem. Our brains learn not to bother recording things we do out of habit.
2. It is a scientific fact that once a person reaches adulthood they begin to lose memories. By the time a person is age 50 they have lost 50% of their short term memory.
I do hope the things I have told you help you.

@Sreekala Yes, we either need to stay young longer or we need to stop losing memories! LOL! I don't think either of those things are in our future! SMH!

We make sure our doors are locked by checking a few times before leaving.. as the handle to the front door was apparently broken for months and we didn't know. But we dont really forget..

Forgetting is natural and happens with everyone. I forget the birthday and anniversaries of my family members.

Yes, that happens to me also. Here is a suggestion. Why not write a note stating that you closed the office properly and then there will be no doubt.

That is stress related and I have had to learn to do things one at a time although I still keep doing everything at the same time.
If I am on here I can forget to do things I mean if I am on longer than say half an hour.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Take it easy, since it won't create many issues in life, it does not matter.

@Sreekala
Have done that a few times and realized that I had to be more concentrated on what I was doing in that moment.
One thing at a time Sue that is my main motto.

I think this is a common reaction for many people no matter what the age. I know their are times my husband and I have thought and wondered the same thing too.

There is nothing you can do about it but just go back and check. That is the price you will have to pay as you say you are getting old

I think that my problem is more that I don't notice things. As for locking up the house at night, its all routine for me. I don't have to think about it.

Well, I do the same thing with turning off my stove at the house. If I'm at the door, I might peek in at the kitchen, just to make sure. If I'm half way to work, I say "oh well," and am relieved when I get home. When things become habit, we kind of do them without thinking about it, so we don't always remember if we actually did it. I'd say it's pretty common.
