"From Russia With Love"

One of my errands that I was going to do today was to purchase some more post cards. I use them up quite quickly since I joined Postcrossing.com. The only place that I know of to purchase post cards is several miles from my house. So, I usually purchase 10 or more when I go. But, I’m down to my last few cards, so I will have to make the trip sometime this week. I have three ready to mail right now. We have a NEW stamp for Global mail, so I’m anxious to start using these new stamps. I think they will be very popular with those who receive post cards from me. I’m a little disappointed with the Russian connection on Postcrossing.com because they are either not receiving my post cards or they are not registering them. I don’t know if it is the postal system there or another reason. I have received SEVEN very nice post cards FROM Russian members, but the ones I send to Russia are not being received or are not being registered. I don’t know if there are any Russians on mylot or not. Does anyone know? I am wondering about the Russian postal system.

I have no experience of mailing to Russia, but did send postcard from Central Siberia to England back in 1981.

Wow! What were you doing in Siberia? Did you visit Lake Baikal? I have always wanted to visit that Lake.

@IreneVincent Yes, I walked on Lake Baikal, which was frozen over at the time. I even saw a man driving an old heavily laden lorry across. I went there n holiday, for which most people called me insane. A few days in Moscow, then across to Bratsk in Central Siberia for a few days. Next on the agenda was Irkutsk, followed by a few days back in Moscow before flying home. The weather was quite mild because I travelled late March, so it was only around 7 or 8 below zero. That is still the best holiday that I ever had.

@Asylum I would have enjoyed that trip. I understand that at one time Lake Baikal was so clean that you could drink the water right out of the lake. But, now it is being contaminated with industrial waste. It makes me ill to think about that.

Do the post-crossing members write messages on the back? and do they write in English? I'm just wondering.

Yes, there is always a message of some sort and its always in English. Some struggle with English but they do VERY well compared to what I would do if I had to write in any other language. Here is a typical message: "Hello Alice, nice to meet you! My name is ___and I live near the old city Utrecht (Netherlands) I like to paint and draw pictures or make Zeutangles. I have 2 border collies and I like to walk and do dog sports., I hope you like this postcard and I wish you happy days." I have no idea what Zeutangles are so I'm going to see if I can find out. And I absolutely LOVE all the beautiful STAMPS from all the different countries.

@JudyEv Yes, and the profiles of each person I receive a card from, is available on the site, so I can learn more about each person and where they live and what they enjoy doing. I'm really glad that I joined. I'm looking forward to a Post Card sale that is coming up at a local college in October. I understand that there will be thousands of post cards of all sorts available for purchase and many will be at really good prices like 10 cents and 25 cents, so I will be able to get a lot of post cards. Right now, I just have one source and I'm going there today. But, the price is two cards for $1.75. Not a good price when I'm sending out about 10 per month. Plus the Global stamps are $1.15 each.

@IreneVincent That's a lovely message - and gives you something to comment and respond too when you write back.

I sent airmail envelopes and even small packages to Russia and no problems so far.

@IreneVincent I also noticed though that they took longer to reach there compared to other international destinations.

@sishy7 Yes, it does take a long time to send post cards to Russia. But, Australia is even farther for me and the post cards I send to Australia get there quicker than I had hoped.

That's good. Several of my post cards to Russia have not been acknowledged through Postcrossing.com

@IreneVincent it works mainly in a proper way, except long periods of delivery, but it can also be a russian roulette. So it is not quite reliable with the items, parcels, letters from abroad.

@TypicalRussian That's what I was thinking. That maybe there was a problem on the receiving end of letters from abroad. Thanks.

AS I mentioned in the post. I am wondering why my post cards to various persons in Russia are either not being received or why they are not being registered when they are received. So, I guess my question is: How reliable is the postal system in Russia?
