Favorite "Talk" Songs #1 - "Talk of the Town"

It's time to stop talking, as we have reached the top spot in my Favorite "Talk" Songs series, which has been a celebration of songs with "talk" in the title. #1 is probably no surprise: "Talk of the Town" by the Pretenders. "Talk of the Town" was the first single from their 1981 album, Pretenders II (it is also available on the EP, Extended Play, as well as the soundtrack for the movie Times Square.) Basically a tune about a girl with a secret crush on a guy, the song did well in the UK, not so much here in the States, although it remains a fan favorite and a concert staple. A lyric from the song appears as homage in Garbage's 1998 single "Special," for which Pretenders vocalist Chrissie Hynde gave her blessing, she refused a writing credit as well. "Talk of the Town" was performed by the band's classic, original lineup: Hynde, guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, bassist Pete Farndon, and drummer Martin Chambers ( Honeyman-Scott and Farndon would both die of drug overdoses soon after.) Although the Pretenders had quite a few songs with an edge to them, "Talk of the Town," is a listener-friendly piece of alternative pop music. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)
