How Long Could You Survive?

I have decided today to straighten up and take note of the canned goods. I have been home canning and they are not in order. So what I am doing is I am putting the sweets of jams, jellies and fruits in one area, Pickled foods in another area and veggies in one area so I will know what I need more of and what I can pass on. I do have a few jars of meats home canned and I need to think about those for Tony, I reckon. It would make it easier to make meals for him when I come in from work very tired. So far in the pantry I have a couple gallon jars filled with dry beans, oats, rice , dehydrated potatoes and pasta, so I am good there and its still clean in the pantry. Later when I go into town I will mail off the receipts to Publix and get a $10 gift card back for spending $20 on any Congra food, this week I stock piled Ketchup for Tony, Hunts 24 ounce size was on sale by one get one at $1.89 so I spent $20.79 on twenty two bottles and I will get $10 back, he is good for a very long time and expiration is March 2019 but it wont last him that long! I do eat ketchup but not as much as he does. Now I ask the question? How long could you survive on the food in your house if there were no more grocery stores or restaurants? I am good at this moment for at least six months.

I would only be good for about 3 days. As we shop day to day most times. And all the snacks are for my mom for work.

@andriaperry The more often I am randomly in a store, the more I tend to impulse buy. Another reason for me to stay out of stores.

We wouldn't survive very long - perhaps a couple of weeks. I don't do any home canning.

I believe we could get by for at least a month. Maybe longer with rationing.

Hmm probably for about 6 to 8 months with what we have in the house and then we have a garden going good right now. Also chickens that gives us about a dozen of eggs a day and rabbits. I also can, just got done doing Watermelon Jam. Hubby just built me a big pantry so I have been busy cleaning out the old one and moving things. I have so many canned tomatoes and stuffed peppers that I'm trying to decide if we need to can them this year. Also seeing we have a creek behind us and deer and such all over. I'm sure we could survive awhile.

Watermelon jam? Not the rinds? Please share the recipe with me! I am absolutely crazy about watermelon. Same here we have deer and turkey wild in the woods rabbit in the yard and I am less then a mile from the river.

I do not do home canning, but judging what I have stored in our pantry and two freezers I think we could easily survive for at least 4 months.

Not long, because we tend to buy what we need and eat it.. we shop once a week. The thing we stock up on we can't eat like soap , toothpaste.. I think we have lot of canned soups, and canned vegetables so we are good there.

I'm not a prepper but I like watching videos about preppers and survivalist. Sometimes I would imagine my self stranded in an island and doing the things I've seen in videos. Then I would realize that i don't want that to happen to me.

No I am not talking about being that extreme. I just grow or buy fresh and make my own so that I do not have so much unwanted additives in my food.

@andriaperry i know, I'm just exaggerating. What you do is actually a typical thing to our family. My dad started it and we just kinda adapted the skill. We also do smoke, preservation with the use of salt.

Wow! Six months... Man, I won't survive six days. This reminds me, I once changed house within 15days because there were no stores in the vicinity. The idea of canned food isn't quite popular in my country yet. It is a good thing as long as the food is well kept and preserved and doesn't lose its nutritional value... Thank you!

@andriaperry, my Mom does... She has a garden with various vegetables growing. My uncle is a farmer... So even though I haven't been able to follow their traditional way, due to urban life, I am still kinda hung up on fresh food part :)

That is not to bad. I have yet to tally up the numbers but I do have more veggies than I thought and that is really good. As we eat the food and the boxes get set aside for the empty jars, things get mixed up, fruits and veggies.

@andriaperry I honestly don't know. Just back in February we had a sudden evacuation when the dam near my hometown was in danger of failing, and we weren't prepared at all. We had no food to take with us. We did end up stocking up on things like Ramen and Cup O' Noodles, as well as bottled water in case we had to leave at a moment's notice again. We don't really have the space to stock up on food in case of an emergency. We have hardly any cupboard space, our kitchen is small, and our freezer barely fits our weekly groceries.

@andriaperry My ranch house was built in the 60s and with no thought for storage. It is terrible for a foodie like me. I don't can or buy stuff to store in the long-term. We could get through a bad hurricane.
