The best TV show instrumental themes: #12 "Miami Vice Theme"

No TV series epitomizes the 80s more than “Miami Vice” (1984-89) created by stylish filmmaker Michael Mann. Two uber cool slickly dressed cops Crockett (Don Johnson) and Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) track down drug dealers when not acting super cool on hot Miami nights. There just had to be a cool theme for this hot action series. Jan Hammer delivered big time with a theme reflecting 80s sound. The “Miami Vice” theme pulsates with synthasizer energy. There is an influence of Mike Curb-Pete Carpenter style of “Magnum P.I.” The instrumental was a smash hit going all the way to Billboard #1. “Miami Vice Theme” was the pinnacle of Hammer’s career and he earned two Grammys for it.

I didn't go for the hype or the "isn't Don Johnson the best-looking thing not named Tom Selleck" (didn't watch that show, either, and I was stationed in Hawaii at the time!!) stuff. But that is a good theme song.

I liked the show and the music is an excellent choice in a countdown. The Glen Frey episode was my favorite.

Great song. Seeing Don Johnson dressed like that made me want to toss out my blue jeans and get a white or pink jacket!

I never watched Miami Vice, so I didn't know the theme song. Even the youtube clip didn't bring any memories back. Unique theme though for sure.

It was my favorite 80's show. I recorded this onto like five different cassettes to listen to in the car.
