First day at highschool

I was talking about high school the other day with my children, my daughter who is 11 starts high school in September and my middle child will leave next June. My daughter is excited but more scared I think, it is a big change and a big step as this now is the most important time of a child's life in terms of setting up the foundations for a future. I cannot remember much about high school, the memories I have are really vague feeling almost as if it never happened. I have odd memories of the last 2 years and I remember about a dozen folks in my year but that is about it. Its 28 years since I left school and I don't know why I cannot recall it more clearly! What I do remember is that I struggled with friendships due to the fact that I changed school quite a bit, my parents owned pubs and they never settled in one place for more than a few years, so we were always on the move, so friendships were hard to find and maintain. With my kids it is different, I made sure of that, I made a promise to myself that I would not move them around through school unless it was for a very good reason and so my kids have known the same people from nursery right through to the end of high school. .

High school years were some of the best years I remember. I was surrounded by good friends and had some great teachers. The only thing is, I was a bit shy and didn't date much, but the one high school girl friend I did have and I are still in touch and still friends. Treasure these years. They will pass all to quickly, and you'll miss them when they are gone. I do. Perhaps that's why my books are about young people entering or in high school. Please enjoy this song by Trace Adkins. I remember my first day in high school like it was yesterday. I had just moved from Chicago to Michigan so I didn't know anyone at the school. I was scared and nervous all at the same time. I heard one of the students making fun of how skinny I was and that's when I just wanted to crawl up in a locker and stay there for ever. The people at my school were really mean to me since I was a new comer and they had already developed their girl cliques which I was excluding from because I wasn't from there. College life was so much better for me!
