I Miss My Chocolate Donuts

Here in Tahiti we have a lot of great French Pastries, but we don’t have any good donuts. The donuts here suck. They are too greasy and have a funny taste. Yes, I can make them at home. However, they don’t seem to taste the same as the ones they have in the US. When I first moved to the US I was hooked on chocolate donuts. Every time my uncle took us to school, we passed by this donut shop. When I first arrived I had never tasted a donut before. I had no idea what to expect. One morning he pulled into the donut shop and my cousin and I went in. She immediately knew what she wanted. I had no idea what to try. I took 1 chocolate donut and one sugar donut. After this I was hooked. I use to beg my uncle to stop there every morning we passed the shop. He was strict with what we ate and donuts weren’t on the menu. However, now and then he would let us have 2 donuts on the way to school. Later, I moved to my grandmother’s in California to finish high school. There was a donut shop down the street from where she lived. The first few weeks of living with my grandmother, I would take my lunch money and go to the donut shop in the morning. I would buy 6 chocolate donuts on my way to school. This was my lunch. I finally got tired of eating donuts everyday for lunch. However, I still loved to go to the shop and get one or two chocolate donuts now and then. Now living here on the islands I really miss my chocolate donuts. Image credit: pixabay free images

Chocolate donuts are delicious but only to be eaten in moderation.

Not when I was younger and living with my grandmother. I ate them when ever I could. After a while I had enough of them and then ate them in moderation.

That was the way my uncle looked at it. My grandmother had no idea I was eating so many donuts. But today I guess they will be a treate if I can ever find a good one in Tahiti.

I wish had places here to get pastries. I remember going to Walla walla, Washington and they had this great coffee house that had stuff croissants. We ate there every time we went. Here they have a couple places but that is all and not real nice assortment of pastries. Just cookies, donuts and a pastry with almond paste in it. We have Dunkin' Donuts which has an entire assortment of donuts. Oh, and we have a Crispy Creme or whatever it's called clear across town. I would love to find a place that makes cake donuts and has a lot of pastries to choose from.

That sounds yummy. However, I can't stomach the French pastries here on the island. They are so sweet and fulled with tons of cream. I would rather not eat them at all.

Could you REALLY eat 6 chocolate donuts for lunch? Yuke! Did you gain a lot of weight?

Yes, I could eat 6 of them for lunch. I never gained a pound doing this one. I went into the 11th grade weighing 83 pounds and when I left high school in the 12th grade I weighed 86 pounds. I still to this day can't get over 100 pounds no matter how much I eat. I am very active and seem to just burn up the food I eat.

@poehere Hard to believe that some people can't seem to gain weight. While others just look at foods and the scale goes up! I can only eat 1 donut with maple glaze at a time.

@marlina We didn't have donuts in France when I was growing up there. The first time I ate one was in Hawaii when I was 13. After this I was hooked. I fell in love with chocolate donuts. I am very active and do a lot of sports and activities. I have a large organic garden I work in. This burns up a lot of calories working outside during the day. You seem to sweat a lot and drink 5 liters of water when you are working. I also eat healthy and don't eat junk food at all. However, I was talking with my granddaughter today and she was eating a donut. This is what me think of chocolate donuts and how much I miss them.

It's funny the things you miss when you move away. I miss good old New York bagels now that I live in Pennsylvania. Luckily we have some decent donuts and my favorite is jelly

Since 1976 when I left the US for work it has been hard to find a decent donut. However, my visits back keep me happy. Now I haven't been back in years and starting to miss them again.

The reason that they are greasy is probably that the oil is not hot enough.

It is the dough they use here. They add a lot of butter in the dough and this makes them extra greasy.

@akalinus Here, French people add way too much butter to everything. On the islands, they cook with too much butter, cheese, and cream to suit me. I can't eat this because it makes my stomach hurt.

I love doughnuts too. One great doughnut shop in the States is Dunkin Donuts , but we don't have one in our town. The nearest is a 45 minute drive. But, we do have a grocery store here in town that has its own cafe/bakery where they have doughnuts and I will treat myself to some on occasion.

I tried Dunkin Donuts once and I really didn't like them. I loved the small donut shop on the corner that was run by an older couple and their kids. They had the best ones in town.

Aww. I haven't had any donuts in a long time. Unless the host party serves the donut holes during church's social hour, I miss them too. But I'm avoiding any junk foods at this rate.

I used to like to eat donuts quite often but now I rarely do. I like maple bars the best. I would say chocolate comes in second for me.

@RichardMeister Yuck. Not a fan of too sweet a donut. Just a bit of sugar and a good chocolate does the trick for me.

Donuts are good. Especially for a 13 year old who never had one before. You can go crazy on them if you are not careful.

@poehere I agree. About 20 years ago I decided eating all that sugar wasn't good for me. It was a bit hard to quit when there was a donut shop just down the street (which is no longer there). We do have a Krispy Kreme about 4 miles from where I live but I don't care for them–they are too sweet for me. I was told they put more sugar in the dough than most.

I know what you mean. The taste of soda pop in America is watered down compared to the soft drinks in Panama.

Me to, I miss chocolate donuts. No donuts here in saudi, well there is Dunkin Donuts but the price... It's like your buying donut springkled with gold dust made by Gordon Ramsey. It's there, you can see and smell it but you can't buy it because you know better to spend $4 on a piece of chocolate donut. See how frustrated I am...

I'm not fussed about doughnuts but I can understand that many people love them. I am pretty hooked on baguettes now that we've arrived in France, The Australians can't make them like the French do, A French chef who now lives in Australia says it's because the flour is different. He imports his flour from France.
