Save a Fortune Buying Sloppy Joe Mix in a Can

My daughter and I were on Facetime the other night. Her husband was talking in the background preparing his grocery list for the week. The Sloppy Joe question came up. Should we have them again this week or not? My daughter starting raving about how her husband makes the best Sloppy Joe’s and he doesn’t buy the stuff in a can. Did you realize that Sloppy Joe mix in a can is only onions, garlic, ketchup, and mustard? With ¾ of a cup of ketchup, 1 teaspoon of mustard, some chopped up onions and garlic you can make your own Sloppy Joe mix at home. All you need is a pound of hamburger, ground turkey, or ground sausage to have homemade Sloppy Joes. Double the ingredients if you use more hamburger. I had to try it. It was delicious and it was the first time my boyfriend ever ate a Sloppy Joe. He ate 3 that night and wanted more the next night. Image credit wikimedia free images

I only used my son-in-laws recipe for the first time this week. He told me how to make them on Facetime when my daughter and I were talking. He said cook your onions and garlic just a bit in a small amount of butter, add your hamburger and cook it. Then add 3/4 cut of ketchup and 1 teaspoon of mustard. Season with salt and pepper. They were delicious.

I don't buy the manwich in a can since I got sick off it. I can't handle the strong spice in it anyway. I usually just do tomato sauce and the sloppy Joe season packet . Less fire on the belly that way

There is a much easier way to make them. Just cook some onions and garlic in a small amount of butter. Add in your hamburger and cook it. Then add 3/4 cup of ketchup and 1 teaspoon of mustard. Season with salt and pepper. Much cheaper and they were delicious.

Ok Gus dinner at 6 PM sharp. We can't keep the food warm if you show up late. Be on time and wear your baseball glove on your left hand. Furthermore, bring along a fishing pool. After dinner we go to the lagoon for some night fishing off the shore. This way tomorrow night we have dinner.

I haven't made Sloppy Joes in years. I don't think I have ever bought the stuff in the can.

When my daughter was younger she had them at school one day. After this she begged me to make them. Growing up in France my mom was American so she made these from time to time. Back then there was no stuff in a can to make them with.

@RichardMeister My mom made them now and then. It was mostly when my dad was away. He did not like them so much.

@poehere We didn't have Sloppy Joes very often when I was growing up, but I do remember having them as a child.

My mouth is watering. One of my favorite foods is burger. Sloppy Joe is like one. I wanted to try it myself. I'll make one at home if my budget is right

Thanks, I did not know that!! I saw the recipe in my old cookbook from the 40's but have never really looked at it. I will try that next time I can find some beef or ground turkey at an affordable price. You have my mouth watering!!

I can see this. Guess like meat is not my kind of food either. Many people love steak, but not me.

I am making a note of this. Seems making it at home would indeed be considerably cheaper.
