Nostalgic Items- Things Worth Saving: One Speed Bikes With Coaster Brakes

Have you ever thought about the things in our society no longer popular or around anymore? Thanks to an old 1989 Life magazine I found in my basement, I've discovered many things in our culture that have become obsolete, different, or near extinct. Due to advancements in technology we have replaced and pushed aside many of these nostalgic items of our past.
So today's nostalgic item is bicycles, specifically the one speed bikes with coaster (foot) brakes. From the tricycle of the 1820's to 1850's to the high wheel bicycle of the 1870's to the more traditional safety bicycles developed in the 1890's manufacturers and inventors were always improving their product. By the turn of the century the bicycle craze was on and influenced the bicycle industry to make better, verstaile, and more efficient bikes for the public.
I can remember when I got my first 10-speed bike. It was like a status symbol! It was the cool bike to have at the time. It looked different from the traditional one speed bikes, was easier to pedal uphill, could go faster than the old version bikes, and had hand brakes, and neat handlebars. The one drawback, they cost a lot more, but it was on every neighborhood kid's birthday or Christmas list in my town.
Now the one-speed bike has not vanished but morphed over time. It is still alive just different in many of today's models. You can still find them in mountain, track, hybrid and road bikes.
What type of bicycle did you own as a kid? And for some of us still riding bikes... as adults?

Yeah, one-speeds! With coasting brakes!!! You bet! I have a six-speed folding bike and an 18-speed. I don't know what's important beyond "stop" and "go," though, unless you're a professional.

I had a banana seat bike when I started learning to ride. Easier to start on since it was so low. These days if I had enough balance and courage I'd demand coast foot brakes not hand brakes. I almost spilled a bike due to not using the hand brakes with equal pressure.

@dgobucks226 Your comment brings back a horror memory for me. The brother that taught me to ride a bike also liked to mess with all things mechanical. He did not get his bike wheel on correctly, was speeding down the street and there went the bike wheel flying ahead of him. I remember me screaming at my Mom that brother had had a nasty accident. That was the start or maybe the middle of his accidents.

@sallypup I had a cousin who did the same thing with a go-cart. Wheels came off and had to take him to the ER. Unlucky

Sometimes those hand brakes stop you so abruptly you feel like your going to fly over the handlebars. I remember those banana bikes they were cool

@dgobucks226 I did not like to use the bike and my bike was in the country house of my grandmother. We did not use the bike in our city, it was too dangerous, my parents would have never let us use our bikes in the streets of Milan.

@LadyDuck Oh I understand. That is a very good reason to not ride a bike. I lived in a suburb so although there were cars traffic was not a problem.

Guess you could ask you cousin? It seems like everyone in my neighborhood had bikes, and since it was before we could drive, it was a quicker and a convenient way to get somewhere.

@dgobucks226 , OUCH!!! Sorry that happened! I can't ice skate either, every time I try I am more on my butt on the ice than on the skates!

Always enjoyed rolling skating. Went to a roller rink a few times and it was great fun Catherine. Not as good on ice skates. I actually separated my shoulder when I fell skating at our college ice rink.

@dgobucks226 - When I was a teenager, I once did an endo over a brick fence because I was trying to figure out what gear I was in.

I had a one speed bike and now a 10 speed which is probably good seeing it is hard getting up some hills now! lol We actually have a really old red one I think it is called a Ryder or something like that, hanging up on the wall of hubbies garage.

@dgobucks226 I figure it is a one speed as it is so old.. lol Yes the 10-speeds are easier all the way around.

I've heard of the Ryder, but don't no anything about the style. 10-speeds are a lot easier on the legs when it comes to riding hills

@dgobucks226 I don't really remember what type of bike I had for my first bike but I knew I loved it as a kid. It would have been a tricycle. And then when I got older I got a two wheel bike and I adored it so much. I nice purple bike that was perfect for my height. I miss it so much.

Mine was a customized BMX bike. All parts made in Taiwan. I still prefer single speed bikes over geared. It's hard hitting legs workout but once you get used to it, its a nice ride. I'm planningvto build me a cruiser. On my next vacation...

Very cool I guess bikes are like clothes in a way, different styles which go in and out of fashion. Thanks for the response.
