Friday afternoon a 12 year old girl sits quietly in the car listing to music and playing with her dog. All of a sudden the quiet scene turned into a life threatening event that took the life of her dog. Out of nowhere a Pit Bull jumps through the car windows and starts attacking the little girl and her dog. The next thing you hear are screams and cries for help from this young child.
The young child jumps out of the car just in time. The Pit Bull is in the driver’s seat of the car and ready to attack. The small dog scared for his life jumps in the back seat of the car and tries to find a place to hide. People come running to help this poor child. A man finds a piece of wood and starts over towards the car. The Pit Bull has the small dog in its mouth and won’t let go. The man tried hitting the dog so he can take the small dog.
Finally the vet was able to put the dog to sleep using his dart gun. However, the little dog didn’t make it, no mater what the vet tried to do.
The mother took her daughter and the dog to the vet. Afterwards, she ran into the market to pick up a few things for the family. The little girl took the dog to the car to wait for her mom. The mother wasn’t in the market more than a few minutes when the Pit Bull attached her daughter and their dog.
Today the Pit Bull is locked in a cage at the Police department. The owner of the dog refuses to come forward. The little girl suffered physiological trauma and is under the care of a doctor. Everyone is waiting word from the courts and what they will do with the dog. More than likely the court will rule in favor of putting the dog down. The dog is a danger to the people here and should have been in the owner’s yard and not on the street.
Do you think Pit Bulls are dangerous? I have a good friend who raises them and all of hers are so loving and kind. While other Pit Bulls I have encountered are dangerous and attack. Dogs learn from their owners and in this case it seemed that the owner of this dog taught him to attack and protect his property. If this was the case he should have had the dog on a chain in his yard and not running around in public.

I think it's how the dog is raised, no matter what the breed is. I have a Rottweiler who absolutely loves children and people in general. She was raised around kids and I trust her with them completely.
She's sweeter than my 100% lab we used to have.

@poehere Yes when they are raised to be mean and aggressive that's what they will be. Just like with children, if you raise them to be mean towards others they will be too.

I couldn't agree with you more. I had a giant dog mixed Rottweiler and German Shepard. That was the sweetest dog ever. I have a lot of large dogs and now small ones. None of my dogs have ever bitten anyone. They were all raised with love and care and also around the kids that live here. I have never worried about one of my dogs. My best friend's Pit is so loving and kind. She is like a loveable baby if you ask me. I have never heard the dog even bark. She comes up to you and rolls on the ground to have her tummy scratched. She plays with the baby and a lot of time you can see the baby sleeping on her. She is such a good dog. It is not all Pits that you have to worry about. It is the ones that owners teach to be mean and aggressive.

Before over here nothing would have hardly happened to the owner but now its different and alas for the dog it would be put down right away.
Any dog can be dangerous really not just one kind.
I have a German Shepherd and I take the utmost care that he does not go out without a leash and a mouth thing.
Very near to me are three very dangerous dogs and they are not Pit Bulls-
My Mother was attacked by Pit Bull when she was pregnant with me and I was terrified of dogs for a long time after.
I grew up with all kind of dogs and my fear of them went forever.

Thing is I respect any dog and never attempt to touch them even if I know them.
German Shepherds here have got a bad name and there are Pit Bulls everywhere.
However one or two of them are quite dangerous and I stay away from them all I can as sometimes they can get loose and they are not very nice and not sociable.

I know it isn't only a Pit Bull that can be mean. It is all about the owner of the dog and how they take care of them when they are small. I have 6 dogs now and I never worry about any of them. My oldest is now 8 and he is so loving and kind. He is a big dog but as gentle as can be. I had a mix with a German Shepherd and she was so sweet.

@lovinangelsinstead21 This is true everywhere. Some dogs are just dangerous and there is nothing we can do about it. Just stay away and be safe that is all we can do.

I think the major problem with this dog is that they can lock their jaw and you can't get it opened unless they do it. I feel bad for the breed and it is a shame that people raise them to fight and be mean.

that is terrible.Pit Bulls have a reputation of this type of behavior.
I feel so bad there and that puppy. Not sure how they would handle this. How did he ever jump in the car window.
They are big dogs.Must had the window open wide.I would never leave my window open that wide.Never.

Yes, the dog should have been tied up. And, yes, it should be put down. I hear all this talk about Pit Bulls not being dangerous but 90% of the time you hear about a dog attack there is a Pit Bull involved.

They are looking for the owner right now There was an article in the paper today. They think they have found him but won't say so right now. Hopefully, this will be taken care of soon because there are so many people here right now that are upset. They are saying that all Pits on the island should be put to sleep. If I owned a Pit and it was gentle and kind I would be upset if I heard this. But, considering I don't want a Pit I don't have anything to worry about. I mush prefer smaller dogs and dogs less aggressive.

@RichardMeister My daughter just adopted one. She did this because he only had 3 legs. If she didn't take him she was afraid he would be put to sleep. He is such a good dog.

@poehere That is the same thing that is said here when there is a Pit attack. Then the Pit owners start preaching about how good Pits are. I wouldn't own a Pit either. When I was growing up we had a Siberian Husky. He was my favorite dog.

This dog needs to be put down. Very sad. Owners need to do a better job of both training and being responsible. I have seen many stories of such things happening. But, I get the argument that not all pit bulls are this way. I think it falls back on the owners and the history of the dogs.

@poehere .....Yes, very true. It's like a computer I think. Only as good as it's owner.

I think yuo are right on this. It is not all Pit Bulls, but some who's owners are irresponsible and treat the dog so mean. All dogs can be mean if they are mistreated. I think the major problem with Pits is that people started using them for the wrong reason. I believe they were once a fighting dog and made to stop and some people think it is cute to train their dogs to fight. So sad for this dog. I saw the picture in the paper of him today in the gated area. He looks so sad and not mean at all. But after what we saw on Friday I would never go near that dog.

This brings tears to my eyes. That little girl will carry this memory all of her life. It was so unfair for her to be frightened like this and also to see her puppy being mauled by the dog. I hope that they find the owner and that justice is brought. It is not the dog's fault as he was doing was he was trained to do. My son and I both had a pit bull and they were fun loving dogs and people could sense that.

They should be more educated and do more research before having a pitbull as pet.

@poehere They should have think twice about having a child or kid near this dog.

@Letranknight2015 The child was sitting in a car waiting for her mom to come out of a store. Nobody knows where the dog came from. He was running loose and saw the little girl's dog in the car and jumped in the car window to attack. It had nothing to do with the mother and having her daughter around this dog. They had taken their dog to the vet and the mom needed to run into the store. So the 12 year old child took the dog to the car to wait for her mom.

Yes I do. Over here in the USA, there's laws for owning a pit bull.

We have laws here on the islands too. Most people who own a Pit Bull respect the laws. I know many Pit Bulls that are so loving and kind it is hard to believe some of the things you hear about this dog. However, there are some who will teach their dog to be mean and aggressive. This was just one of those dogs and normally if they are reported the police will go and pick them up before anything like this can happen.

I had a Brindle Pit Bull @poehere and she was the sweetest dog unless someone came onto the property and tried to hurt me. But then again, I had voice and hand command trained her too. The dog probably will be put down and it is the owner's fault completely. It's a shame they can't put the owner down instead of the dog.

I agree with you. My two dogs went everywhere with me. They were very big dogs. One weighted 58 kilos and the other 39. The larger one was a Rotti/German Shepard mix and I am not even sure the breed of the other. We call them local dogs. The only time the two of them ever got angry was one time. Some neighbor came to our garden and started yelling at me. The two came running and stood on each side of me. All I had to do was put my hand on their heads and they calmed right down.
The owner of this dog is at fault. The only reason any dog will become aggressive and attack is because it was taught to do this. My brother's wife works for a vet and adopted a Pit mix. It was the most gentle dog with their kids. I saw a photo of the dog yesterday in the paper. He looks so sad standing behind the locked, gated inclosure he is in now. I know they will put him to sleep it is only a mater of time now.

@nanette64 You are right. But if he attacks once he can attack again. It would take a lot of work, love and kindness to change him now. He didn't look mean in the photo they had in the newspaper. But according to the TV anytime a person approaches him he tries to attack. Poor thing that is all he knows how to do.

I agree with you so much. I think they have located the owner but so far they haven't said much about this. Right now the court is making a decision as to what will happen with this dog. I think it will be put to sleep for sure. As for the owner, he will have a lot to account for.

I think any dog can be dangerous. We had a pit bull mix, for awhile, who was very sweet. But then, we were training him to be 100% submissive.
We've actually had more problems with little dogs "attacking" the kids, than big dogs. My grandma's Pomeranian often snaps at the kids, without provocation. My daughter has also been bitten by an ornery old Chihuahua and a Jack Russel Terrier. She came close to having her eye damaged with the Jack Russel bite...

Wow, that is scary. I have 5 small Bichon Frise dogs and they are so sweet and kind. I know some small dogs think they are bigger than we are and they are the boss. All dogs can be mean if you don't watch them and correct the problem immediately. that is the problem they are wild animals and we make them domesticated.

I have to agree with you on this. It was terrible and all over the news for 3 days. Even yesterday it appeared in our paper and they still hadn't made a ruling on what will happen to the dog.

I think of pit bulls as "sensitive." You can raise them to be lovers or fighters. The hit-and-run owner of the violent dog is probably a criminal. I feel a post coming on about an interaction I had with a pit bull at a blues club in the 'hood in Oakland.

That was my perception, too, not until I got my own pit. Everything has changed since then. Dogs get their behaviors from the people that raised them. When we adopted our pit, I was hesitant. I was a little skeptical to pet him. I was always cautious and it was unfair for DJ, my pit. Later on, I realized that pits are one of the sweetest dogs, loving and cuddler.
I feel sorry for the little girl and her family. I also feel sorry for the dog. He/she was a victim of uneducated owners.
