He is too small for a dog. Not a good idea. Maybe if he is a big bigger around 6yrs old will be better.

DOGS, CATS OR EVEN ANY OTHER ANIMAL IS LIKE HUMAN KID THEY NEED YOUR FULL ATTENTION AS YOU GIVE TO YOUR OWN KID ,THE TIME ,ENERGY, FOOD AND NUTRITION ,THEY TOO NEED IT JUST AS HUMAN KIDS DO. FIRST EVALUATE YOUR OWN STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES AND SEE IF YOU CAN MANAGE THE STRESS THAT GOES WITH RAISING A CHILD ALONG WITH A SMALL PUP....... DON'T JUST ADOPT A PUP FROM ANY PUPPY MILL BECAUSE THE DOGS THEIR ARE NOT BROUGHT UP AND BREED IN PROPER CONDITION ALSO NOT KEPT IN HYGENIC CONDITION .......... PLEASE TRY TO ADOPT DOGS OR PUPS FROM SHELTER THEY WOULD GET NEW LIFE THEY DESERVE TO HAVE THEY TOO NEED HOME ............ ALSO PUP OR KITTEN IS A LIFETIME COMMITTMENT YOU JUST DONT ADOPT A PUP OR KITTEN TILL YOUR KID WANTS TO PLAY AND THEN ABANDON IT ..... THE PUP IS NOT A TOY..... IT TOO HAS LIFE AND FEELINGS LIKE WE DO THIS IS NOT DONE .....SO.PLEASE DO EVALUATE YOUR OWN SITUATION BEFORE MAKINGA NY DECISION ON ADOPTION

At 1-year old, not a good idea. Better to buy your son a dog when he can help taking care of it.

To me that seems a little young although on the other hand, if the dog is the right kind and very gentle they could grow up together. Personally, I am always nervous about dogs around little children in case the dog gets jealous.

I think your son is too young to have dog as pet, maybe a stuffed toy dog is a good replacement.
