Our Healthcare system really needs to change!!

I have decided recently that our healthcare system is not set up to help everyone. I know that for someone with a mental illness who goes to the ER, they can not get the help that they need. Whats even worse is the fact that the doctors can release them even if they are not stable. This is scary, how can a doctor release someone that could possibly be a danger to themselves. What I have found out is that in order to get help it takes having the police department contacted and having a report filed in order to get this person into a hospital for mental illness. This needs to change, More hospitals need to have the means to treat someone with a mental illness.

I agree, the sad part is even with insurance there are several hospitals out there that are not equipped to handle Mental health issues, and this is what has me so frustrated.

@Countrygirl1972 they should be able to transfer them to a facility that is specialized for mental health issues. That's what they do around here.

@NJChicaa , here they will only do that if there is a court order, or if the person with the mental illness agrees to go. The issue with that tho is if the person is not stable, the hospital will just release them. I know this from personal experience.

And there are virtually no mental hospitals anymore. Services have been drastically cut. Also often, police are not trained to deal with mental health issues and as we have seen, many mentally ill are in great danger if the police are called.

@Countrygirl1972 I feel that not enough people want a change to come about..I feel that there are only very few people who are truly aware, compassionate and willing to help. Sorry to hear of that family members demise into madness.

This is true, that is why I am so grateful that there are some police officers in our area that do understand mental issues. There needs to be more done to help with this issue for sure. I know someone who had a family member that had PTSD and was begging for help, however, he did not get any help, instead, he ended up shooting some one and later ended his life. This is what worries me, and why I can not understand why this can not be changed.

There are lots of problems with treating mental illness, one being the definition of mental illness. There is such a variety of illnesses of the mind and many are very difficult to diagnose. Also there is the problem that mental illness can be faked by an unscrupulous person.
