Eye of the tiger

About two years ago I had cataract surgery in both eyes. Its day surgery with mild discomfort. One of the side effects is film forming on the lens. This also is easy to fix with a laser. About a year ago I had to have the laser treatment on my left eye and now in a couple of weeks I have to have it done to my right eye. Its a five minute procedure that they can bill insurance companies a lot to do. My eyes are just getting back to normal after my appointment today where they put a half a dozen different drops in my eyes dyes too. I learned that I have to have prescription glasses for close work because my left and right eyes have a big disparity in vision. I had two years without the need for glasses which felt pretty good, now I will only need the glasses for close work. It is so amazing what they can do with eyesight now.

So the cataract surgery did no good and then you had to have the laser a year later?

Surgery worked great didn't have to wear glasses at all and now only wear them for close work. When they do cataract surgery it is actually considered transplant surgery, so I have to carry my transplant id. The laser is only to remove a film that builds up around what is now a foreign body in your eye.

Thank goodness for technology. When my grandparents moved to California, they had this full health checkup and my grandma had a cataract surgery. For the first time in forever, I saw my grandma without glasses.

My husband's auntie has cataract and the doctor said it would be better that she had them operated on. But she said that she has heard others had it and their cataracts didn't get better. I told her, maybe their eye doctor isn't that good. How can I ever convince her that the operation will do her eyes good?

I don't know how to convince her, but I am glad I had it done. It was so nice to be able to put the glasses aside for the most part. I think most of my problems are related to my uncontrolled diabetes, so if she does not have other medical conditions to complicate things, she really should do it. They do one eye at a time so she could do one eye and if she does not like the result she can stop there.

I just had the same surgery a month ago. I love my new lenses, but my eyes get tired especially if in the sun, like yesterday driving across NYS. I need glasses to read but just wear sunglasses outdoors. I was and still am amazed how bright everything is.

Exactly the way it went for me....I really never realized how bad my vision was until the surgery. I had both eyes done and they do it one at a time here so the waiting in between was a little rough.

@sumofalltears mine were about 3 weeks apart and I was awed on how dull my life was before the surgery, life is so bright now.

That's wonderful to hear. I may need that surgery in a few years, too. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I have heard this same kind of story a lot since I found out I had a cataract. Now that it's gone my vision has improved at least 70%

I'm scared to get my vision corrected with lasers but eventually I will have to. I'm sure in a few years nobody will be wearing glasses anymore

Laser correction is not a problem at all, you don't feel a thing.

and here I thought, once people had cataract surgery, their eyes would be trouble-free forever after.... From what you said, it is not so. Now I am worried. (in case I have a need for that sort of surgery in the future.)

Nothing is trouble free. My problems are minor and easily corrected.

A friend of mine just recently had cataract surgery, too, but I'm not sure how she's doing. She lives in Victoria, BC and I'm in Ontario, so we obviously don't see each other too often anymore. (We became friends when we both lived in Vancouver.)

The lenses of glasses used to be real thick now they are thin. It is amazing what they can do.
