Would you give away something that was special to you?

I replied to a discussion with @OneOMany about giving someone a rock. It is a very good discussion and it brought back a memory when I gave my oldest grandson a rock.
This made me start thinking about giving away things. I figure that I can't take it with me and if someone really wanted something it sure wouldn't hurt me to give it to them. My heirlooms I would not give away as they will go to family members. But a picture, knick knack, things like that aren't really that big of a deal.
How do you feel about this? I know we all have things that we do want to keep and that is understandable.

I definitely don't mind giving away things to charity. Of course, there are heirlooms that I'd want my family to keep.

I can give my gold medal in literary competition to my alma mater or any group who would want to use it for greater cause

I guess you wanted to say, would you give away any special material things. Though you can give away things, you cannot give away your family such as wife, children and relatives you love dearly. Your children can get married but you are not giving them away, you are only expanding your family only, because you would still keep in touch with them.

It is just stuff after all. I remember when my grandmother was getting older. She started giving me those things she knew I enjoyed of hers. I may do the same thing when I feel my days or more numbered. I think we give things for a reason. I got a beautiful amethyst bracelet from a co-worker one time just because she had appreciated something I had done for her. All different reasons for giving things we have to others.

@celticeagle We sure can. My plants are living proof. I sell some then the next thing I know someone is giving me clippings or potted plants. But they are a little income for me. The only problem is that I can only keep so many plants here during the winter.

I have a very expensive and old leather bomber jacket that was my dad's that he handed down to me when I turned 16. I love that jacket, and wear it all the time in winter (well...what passes for winter in Florida). My son, who is 14 now, has been asking when I will hand the jacket down to him. I told him that when he grows into it, I will pass it on to him. Thankfully, he still has a lot of growing to do before he fits into that jacket. Truth be known, I don't want to give up that jacket. I want to keep it all the way to the day I die, but I know I can't be selfish like that. Besides, I promised my son I would give it to him once he can fit into it. I will probably cry when I finally hand over that jacket someday! haha
{I also think I will borrow it from my son quite a bit! lol}

@velvet53 He's a little guy, so unless he goes on a major growth spurt soon, it should be a few more years before he even gets close to being able to fit in that leather jacket. So, I figure I have at least 2-3 more years of enjoying that jacket!

@moffittjc Cool! Enjoy it while you can. Maybe he will forget that you told him that you would give it to him.

I think that if a close friend wanted something not earmarked for a family member, I might make it a gift.

That is nice of you. I try to find place that gives clothing and stuff to the needy at no charge. I was at the laundromat one day and got to talking to this lady. I had seen her and her son around a lot and knew some about them. She kept admiring this tye dye t-shirt that I had. I laughed at first and told her that I had had it for years and it was wearing out. We talked for awhile and she mentioned it again. I gave it to her. I have seen her many times since and she seems to always have it on. That made me feel good.

I am also thinking of that! But the most valuable things,I 'll give it to my son and to his girlfriend/future wife. I can also give away other small things to other people so they can still use it.

I hold onto things. I am not yet at the point where they have lost their luster and time to dispense.
