Giving back to our Janitor

After three nomination attempts (and three months of waiting), our building janitor was finally named Employee of the Month. I've never been happier knowing that we were able to give something back for all the work he's put in for us. I've never seen anyone work as hard as he has. He cleans the rooms in the building, takes out the trash in each production floor (there's seven), he even has time to buy people food if they are unable to go out and buy. This is how selfless he is. This is also a major reason why I've been pushing that he gets the award (there's a cash prize that comes along with it which would help his 3 girls and wife.)
When the announcement was made, you can imagine how noisy the building was with everyone applauding and cheering him on. He had tears in his eyes when he found out. I've never seen anyone so down to earth. Just really happy that somehow, we were able to give a little back.
I hope we all don't overlook the people who make life at work easier for us. If you have any similar stories to share, would love to hear them.
Have a great day!

He does. Everyone was clapping for him when he entered our room yesterday to clean it. He had on a sheepish smile and was thanking everyone.

@velvet53 Thank you. It does... and it would't have happened too without the support of my team (we're 66) as well as the other folks in the building. They have a nomination every month and with people in each of the five buildings are encouraged to nominate. So it's really nice too to see people vote for him.

@rosedust82 You did a marvelous thing by pushing so hard for him to get Employee of the Month. I know that makes you feel good too.

He really is! He has something wrong with his right eye but it still doesn't stop him from working his butt off.

@rosedust82 that is really wonderful, most of the times the Janitor does not get enough of credit.

Wow..It is so nice knowing that there is something like that in the Philippines..The companies I used to worked, most of them really don`t give something like that to janitors since they`re under an agencies and don`t stay with us permanently, like changing people every after 3months..The only thing we did was give them something if they will be transferred soon..

The good thing about the ones we have here, they're directly hired by our company so they're really given the perks that we also have here. They also get to join us during parties and teambuildings.

I know by experience how annoying it is to take out the trash specially if it's not thrown properly. He deserve it. Wished I have seen the pictures.

Don't have the official pics yet from the company. Not sure if you can see it but he's the guy on the lower left of the pic. This was announced simultaneously across our five office buildings. He does so much more than what he's supposed to and runs to your aid when you need something from him.

I do hope they would give him an increase! but he did win some money for winning Employee of the Month and am pretty sure he either put it away for his kids and wife or bought them something.

aside from cleaning and running errands, they also help in lifting and moving things, maybe even fix things, and they're expected to be there every day. he may not be contributing financially to the company, but everything he does is like an invisible oil or glue that you only notice when he's not around.

Completely agree! I sometimes visit the office on a Saturday and Sunday and I'd see him here working because he was asked to help move things or do small repairs. Him, along with a few other people, have really made our stay in the company comfortable. He'd always have a smile on his face, regardless of how tired he was.

My husband worked in a small for many years as an administrator. He was always really appreciative of the 'little people' who kept the place functionning. These people were the cleaners, kitchen staff and maintenance men. Without their input, the place would have ground to a halt very quickly. That's wonderful that your janitor received an award.

I agree! I never fail to say thank you to these people and if I do see them tired or in a bad mood, I try to speak with them to make them feel better. Sometimes people forget how hard these people work and try to demand so much from them.
