Working Out...

I'm almost 40 now and I'm finding it harder and harder to work out. I wake up the next day and I'm stiff all over. Even my fingers are stiff and sore after a work out session! Does anyone have this problem? Does it just get worse from here or is there anything I can do to improve things?

I'm very much past 40. I don't work out, but try to stay active and hydrated. I walk for at least an hour a day. The aches and stiffness are rarely a problem. Unless I suddenly overdo a new activity....kayaking for 3 hours.

I don't think you should be getting so stiff at your age. In another 25-30 years perhaps. Maybe you are just overdoing things.

@redurnet I hadn't thought about warming up and warming down but I think that could have a lot to do with you stiffening up so much.

You are probably right, I think it is easy to forget to warm up and warm down more than I did when I was younger too.

Nope..I am more into walking exercise than work outs because work out is more stressful for me..

I like to do a lot of walking too. I gave up running a few years back. I was actually starting to worry about being an older runner and the idea that I might have a heart attack or something.

@redurnet ..Yes..It is much better to have a relaxing exercise because when we get older our body gets slow and we must learn how to accept that but still must give our best to walk as a way of helping our whole body to function

Do you do stretches? That may help.

I think that might help. I used to do yoga a lot but due to having other commitments I haven't been doing it much lately.

Did you suddenly start to work out or little by little building it up? I know when I was doing a lot of running years ago I would see people joining the running club and doing too much too soon and then end up feeling stiff or even worse injured. Not sure what work out you are doing but do you warm up before exercising and warm down afterwards?

@redurnet Glad that you are feeling a lot better now. Yes, it could be down to age also, good that you go slowly into your workouts. warm downs are so important to recovery. Wish you all the best with your future workouts. It good to stay and be active.

I am actually feeling a lot better now. I don't know if my fitness just wasn't good enough for a period or if I wasn't getting the right nutrients or something but it's definitely not as bad as it was when I wrote this post. I must admit I am not able to go into workouts like I used to and instead go really slowly into them and take longer to warm down. I guess part of it might be age related.

The first signs of middle age so to speak. Remember when we just did an activity without really stretching. I have been doing yoga stretches daily which help me recover from exercising. It helps prevent injuries and I am not as sore

I used to do yoga a lot more but I started to get a bit lazy about it. Trying to gradually pick back up now to see if it helps. I know a lot of people who do yoga really late in their lives so it must do the body a lot of good.

@redurnet Yes, it something we can do as we continue to age. I can't tell you what a difference it has made for my back. It really helps

I used to go mountain-biking when I was your age. I didn't have that problem.

our bodies do slow down with time - take more time doing slower exercises and check with your doctor what might be the best exercises for you

Thanks, that is good advice. It's definitely true that I can't do a lot of things I used to do anymore. I used to be a very flexible dancer, for instance, but I've lost a lot of suppleness now.

Take a warm shower or bath after a workout, that should. You will be less sore the more you do it.

Thanks, I used to enjoy using my sister's exercise bike as it felt so smooth on the legs compared to actually riding a real bike!

I'm in my 70's and exercise at the YMCA five days a week, With age I have some aches and pains but the daily movement and exercise has done what it promised to do. My pain is in my knee because I need a replacement, once that is done I hope I continue to be pain free. I think the more you exercise, the easier it gets, the better you feel. Good luck!

I started running at age 40 and worked up to three miles three times per week. I decided that it was too hard on knees and joints and I walk now, 2 to 3 miles three times per week. I highly recommend yoga for joint and muscle stiffness. Try a beginners' class and you will love it.

I used to run but gave it up after feeling I was just too old to do it. I hear a lot of stories about people my age having heart attacks while jogging.
