Building a good habit

In my experience, building a good habit gradually is quite beneficial in the long term. I think it is the highest investment one can make in oneself. Because it is highly profitable in so many ways, it is also difficult to develop. What do you think? How do you succeed in breaking the barriers and build good habits?

The only problem is, bad habits are just so much fun.

@explorer101 Not sure I agree, in the long term chocolate for breakfast looks extremely fun.

@Rhombus It depends on your perspective. Something may be a fun, but not healthy or productive. And something may be healthy, productive and fun as well. I am not talking about chocolate or anything like that. I am talking about building habits that are healthy and productive. If they are fun as well, that is even better. I am for it.

Yes, in the short term, they look fun. But, in the long term, they are not.

Building good habits require consistency. And they develop gradually.

While I agree with that , bad and good are relative , depending on culture and region.

Perhaps I am trying to elaborate building those habits that are universally productive and infinitely profitable. For example, building a habit to do exercise (say, 30 minute walk) daily or enquiring the welfare of your loved ones daily.

I try to only do good things and never do bad habits. Sometimes it is hard.

Definitely, building good habits is one of the hardest things. But, the question is how we deal with it. One thing I have found useful is build it slowly. For example, to walk, do it 5 minutes a day, then 10 minutes next day and so on.

From what I know, if you keep sticking to good habits they will become habits for you.

I agree that it would be difficult and yet you'll be able to feel the fruits in the longrun. I try to discipline myself and always include building a good habit in my prayers so I can remember it daily.

Good. Disciplining oneself certainly helps. And prayers, meditation etc. help build discipline.
