Childhood Memory - Halloween Costumes!

I know I did a holiday traditions posts, but with Halloween coming and stores already getting candy and stuff out on the shelves, I think this post is perfect to do. As a baby and toddler, my mom dressed me in the normal baby / toddler type costumes like pumpkin, monkey, and lady bug. Not sure about ages 4 - 6, as my mom can't remember and there's no pictures to show what they were. But at age 7, I was the typical princess. Then you have age 8 where I wanted so bad to be Pocahontas.. But my mom couldn't find a costume. So my Uncle's then girlfriend started to make me the costume, but never got to finish it due to having a baby, so it was only 1/2 - 3/4 done by the time Halloween came around.. But I didn't care, Pocahontas I was! And every year after that I believe I just kept being a witch, as it was the easiest costume to wear, and meant my mom could save from not having to keep buying costumes every year. Even wore it four Halloweens ago when my mom and I went with my friend to take her two kids out, and then again two Halloweens ago when my mom and I took my 3 nieces and 2 nephews out . Gotta say though, the Pocahontas one was always my favorite. It just was one size and not finished. -- What about you? What was a few of your costumes, or just your favorite one? Tagging my friend Cait, as I know she loves Halloween! @skydream

We always did scary. Devils and skeltons, Witches and ghosts. As a grown up witches, a hippy, cat many times, a bum... to many to name. I love Halloween! I always decorated the house, caskets and bones, flying ghosts. It was always fun to give candy out and scare the kids then they would laugh.

Was never into scary. And we never decorated the house. Hardly was home longer than an hour on Halloween to even give out candy.

@andriaperry I still go because I go with kids. Rather go and watch them have fun than give out candy. Especially since every year theres less and less kids coming around due to less people giving out in here.

@Courtlynn I did all that when I was older and stayed home instead of trick or treating. I stopped going when I was in my twenties, although I could still fit in with the group I think its better for me to give candy than to take.

@Courtlynn I love gypsies. When I was a child there were gypsies in the city. I suppose there still are, but they dress like everyone

You didn't have it? As in no one did it at all, or just you didn't do it? Cause my great-grandmother did it?

We never celebrated halloween, not our tradition here, especially when I was a kid. We do celebrate all saint's day and all soul's day but we never wore costumes at all.

@Courtlynn It's not our culture to do so so I think we didn't miss anything. We had our own and we enjoyed our own tradition and culture.

@toniganzon Maybe true, but I can still feel bad that others don't get to celebrate something that people here can. Whether people not from here agree with me feeling bad for them or not

I cannot remember my favorite costume! I know I was a princess, a witch, a singer and a clown.

Sadly, I rarely got to go as anything as my parents didn't have money and wouldn't buy me a costume. I usually had to improvise. I was once a ball player, another time a ghost (because I mean a sheet). I know for the school Halloween thing we did I dressed as a clown almost every single year because my sister had costumes for my brother and me that we borrowed specifically for school and then gave them back. I know one year I went as a witch because we borrowed the costume from my mom's friend. I think my parents only ever bought me a costume twice. When I was really little it was Tweety bird I was probably 2 or 3 so I barely remember it but it was the cheap plastic costumes with the crappy mask that you could barely see out of. The other time they bought me a monster mask that I wore. I really go out on Halloween for my son and try to not do traditional with him, except his first Halloween when he was a pumpkin because that was the only costume they had when I bought it that would fit him. He has been a sock monkey, and bugs bunny (I just realized how ironic that is since I went as Tweety lol), he's been a dinosaur, then a couple years ago he started wanting his dad to dress up with him so far they've been a cop and robber (my son was the cop and he handcuffed his dad lol), and they have been Mario and Luigi (my son being Mario) those are semi traditional but it looked cooler since his costumes matched his dad. This year he wants them to be Tom and Jerry but I can't find cheap enough costumes. They may go as Pikachu and Ash. I haven't decided. I love Halloween.

Me as Princess Ozma, my sister as Glinda, and my brother as one of the Lollipop Guild. My mom made our costumes. Halloween 1988.
When I was really little, my mom always made me, my sister, and then the first of our brothers, Wizard of Oz themed costumes every year. One year I was Dorothy, another year I was the Wicked Witch of the West..but my favorite was the year I was Princess Ozma from "Return to Oz." Then when I got older I put together my own costumes and would be things like a rock star, princess, bride, witch, cat, and one year I was Cyndi Lauper (although people kept asking if I was a hooker that year.)

We don't celebrate Halloween in the Philippines although some businesses are trying to commercialize it. I remember watching movies with "treat or trick" children going around their neighborhood when I was at that age and thought what a wonderful experience they are having and why can't we do that here instead of visiting the cemetery on All Soul's day?

Any pic of that Pocahontas to share? (I am curious!). You are right, witch costume seems to be easy. We always have plenty of different and very pretty witches going around our neighborhood every Halloween.

Halloween always fascinated me. Too bad we don't celebrate it here, the most we do is Halloween themed parties but a small party cannot compete with a full fledged festival in any way.
